I had to use WTFast because Verizon Fios throttles its connections with SE's servers somehow. I forgot the exact explanation for it but I've heard of plenty of other people having similar problems with Verizon Fios.

Any ninja that doesn't use WTFast is doing it wrong or plays on a PS3/4.
Mudra lag? No more.
Not only does it help with Mudras and dodging but it also improves your DPS conciderably, you may think due to the skill queue it doesn't really do all that much, but only now I realize that you could never compare the parses of US and Japanese players with EU ones, because they got the better connection which automaticly leads to better DPS, EU servers can't come soon enough.
i used to use it but i didnt really notice any difference at all for me but ive never really had latency problems to begin with so that could be it
So I've tested it with the Basic version and while a have basically no improvement at daytime (120 ping from Europe) it vastly improves at the later hours. My ping goes up to 200 or more with crazy lag spikes after 6pm which is probably related to my ISP. Dodging stuff is nearly impossible that way. WTFast brings that down to 150 again which makes it playable.
I used to use it back when Titan Extreme was kinda newish content. I used to get awful lag back then and couldn't dodge him for my life. With WTFast up he was so much easier. I only used it while it was free though, I can't personally afford to pay a sub for that as well as the game. Lucky for me my connection seems much better these days and I don't seem to lag anymore other than the odd spike when everyone else gets it too. If you struggle with dodging Titan etc deffo give the free trial a go.
You were able to have an unlimited free trial before the update. You could extend your free-trial every 14 days via a share through facebook (which I do, hehehe).
But yeah, all Europeans MUST use a VPN or a service like WTFast/Pingzapper to play this game properly. I've even noticed DPS increases using WTFast, in conjunction with Lagarith Latency Fix.
I have a 50-60% improvement in latency reduction with WTFast from 180ms to 100-110. I wouldn't play the game without it. This is with the basic model (free)

Sometimes it says "no connection improvement" (it does this randomly and then shows numbers every now and then) but as you can see from the stats, the improvement is there. I have to check that warning though. My settings should be ok, i think. If i can get sub 100ms with paid sub, i might consider.
i just found out about this today im getting 40-56% improvement on my ping :) it makes playing ninja actually fun! its like a whole new game!
I gave it a go (w/ the free trial); only a marginal latency reduction (i.e. 10-15 m/s less), however, I did see some packet loss during the duration of the trial.
To everyone that have used WTFast trial and are not impressed, I can tell you that there is a huge difference between Trial version and Premium version.
Trial version really doesn't help much more than giving your connection a better route to the game-server, which can improve your ping by a tiny amount, a huge amount, or not at all... You will most likely reduce the lag spikes and maybe packet loss because of that reroute, but it won't help your connection more than that.
Me using Trial
Off-peak hours: 130-140 ms - some ping spikes[20-30 ms] - a few packet losses
Peak hours: 170-200 ms - tons of ping spikes[50-100 ms] - pretty many packet losses
Me using Premium (chained connection)
Off-peak hours: 105-115 ms - no ping spikes - no packet loss
Peak hours: 110-120 ms - 1-2 ping spikes[<10 ms] - no packet loss
I think you can see the benefits for me pretty clear...
I have used Basic for a while too, and it certainly helps during those peak hours, but the tier 1 network you use with premium is vital for my raiding... and for me personally, it's worth spending that money, even though I really don't like doing it.
It's really case-by-case that a VPN is worthwhile for gaming, but having to pay for an additional service to be able to play the game as it was intended is silly.
It's always bothered me that they chose to lie to customers as to the whereabouts of the European servers, as semantic trickery is dishonest. When you have Japanese server in Japan, and N/A servers in N/A, you don't expect the "EU" servers to be in N/A.
Personally, I'm still waiting to see what SE intend to do with their new cash cow in FF14 (vs-à-vis the Cash Shop)...
They haven't been lying though... The servers have always said "EU recommended", they have never said it was strictly EU servers, hence why there are a lot of Americans on them too. We have also always known that the servers are in Montreal, Canada.
With the state the game was in before launch, I can't really blame them for not spending more money on real EU servers, 'cause I don't think anyone predicted it would be such an success. The reason we get high pings, is down to the awful infrastructure in N/A, and SE can't really affect that.
There are coming real EU servers though, either in the expansion or later, but we will get it (kinda annoying now since I play with people from US and Australia).
Like I said, I don't like having to pay that money for it to work like I want, but I really don't have a choice if I want to keep play the game and enjoy it.
I don't know where the "EU recommended" comes from, as selecting a data center on the character creation/ login screen simply state that it is "Recommended for residents of North America[/Japan/ Europe]" depending upon which Data centre you have selected. There is no information pertaining to where the servers are actually located.
Neither on the website does it clarify this point. The closest I could find was "When logging in for the first time, you will be prompted to select a regional data center. Your choice of data center will determine the Worlds you may choose from after creating your character." (http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/playguide/win/).
Without third party IP tracing, how would anyone have concretely known where the servers were? I'm not trying to get into a harangue with you, I'm just stating that clever word play gives the impression that certain Data Centers are more beneficial for certain parties, else why would you delineate between data centres that a located in the same place?
When a player in the U.S, playing on a N/A server, can perform all of their mudras in one GCD (w/ oGCD abilities too), and I then look at what I'm able to do, then I wonder why I'm paying the same price for my subscription.
I don't know specifically why SE didn't start off with a European based data centre, but as you pointed out, it's most likely to do with money issues...
I tried the trial, but honestly didn't notice any appreciable difference so stopped using it.
There is a lot of signal to noise on stuff like this. It works for some people and doesn't work for others. Unfortunately it's not a one size fit all kind of thing. What you should do is pay for one month and monitor it over the course of the month. If you notice a significant improvement then keep using it. If it doesn't help then stop using it and write a feedback letter regarding it's performance. I have not tested it myself, as I have good internet and latency, but a tank I play with couldn't survive standard dungeons without it. Her latency has literally been cut in half. In fact it's such a visible difference that I can finally start doing dps as WHM in most dungeon instances now.
I just started using WTFast (CA resident; free edition for the record) and the biggest difference I see, randomly enough, is in my gathering nodes. I used to always experience a delay in between each gathering attempt, which is largely gone. Aside from that, I don't notice much of a change elsewhere in the game.
I'd love to hear some concrete experiences with the premium service, maybe with some stat pictures included.
Wanted to tag on to this. I use WTFast and I pay for it, I use a wireless connection and with WTFast I go very smooth. I see al the beauty of my great axe swinging in the air to the sad face I create and the tears that flood on the ground after failing that 4 star synth.
In case it hasn't been said, first month on WTFast is free and doesn't kick you every 20 minutes like battleping, so it's great for testing out. Sign up for the free month, go back and forth between using it and not using it and get a feel for whether it makes a difference for you or not.
Oh cool, good to know. I may see if that's enough when my current subscription ends.
I paid for the Premium version for a month and found no difference whatsoever between it and the Basic one, using the chained servers following the guide to set them up actually made it worse. I ended up going with Pingzapper because it seems to give me a bigger improvement.
It does suck that programs like this are basically a requirement to play Ninja well outside of Japan. They really need to revisit Mudras and how they work. I don't know if making Mudras client-side then having them send the combination you entered to the server to do the final Ninjutsu would work, but something needs to be done.
It's not though. I know it said Free version is now unlimited but I just got the "extend for 14 free days through Facebook" thingy. I couldn't connect without doing that.
I also can NOT recommend Pingzapper. I paid for that but it has so many problems. I still get the 90002 constantly in addition to their service crashing all the time.
This, all of this for playing Ninja. It's such a huge difference with mudras running Wtfast then not running it. It's not perfect all the time, but without running it it makes the job unplayable honestly.
Any tunneler (Pingzapper, BattlePing, WTFast, et al) will help considerably with basically everything related to lag in the game. WTFast is a wretched memory hog in my experience though and I don't like it's obsession with vaguely trying to qualify its "improvements" to me.
But also, yaknow, Basic tier is free and the wallet's tight this month.
ive actually been using this for the last few months and it has improved my connection a lot, took a few hours to play around with the settings and server/port choices but have come up with the best connection...for me anyway! i recommend to anyone with lag issues to give it a try....im in aus, fyi.
with subs at 4mil and increasing hopefully (one day) se will implement servers in aus for all oceanic players
I'm in Chicago which is relatively close to Montreal compared to many players and still, the lag without WTFast renders the game unplayable for me. So I have use it. There must be a bad hop somewhere in the great lakes area.
So what Server do you guys choose? Closest to you or closer to the actual server? I tried a many servers from WTFast and only have a reliable connection at prime time when I choose one closer to the FFXIV servers. (I'm from Europe btw).
For me as EU player Ninja is unplayable without WTFast, I would've quit this job months ago without it as my ping is around 160+ and Mudras are a living hell.
EU servers can't come early enough.
i also use chain connection
1st server i go with closest to me ie: aus
2nd server i go with closest to server ie: japan
i play on tonberry and japan is a lot closer than canada (6800km vs 14100km)
Ah alright. But I'm using the Free Basic Version where I can't use chain connection. But servers close to Montreal work for me. WTFast Servers from Europe do not however.
Too bad I can't test the Premium version for a day or so...
