Oh no. You see, me and a few others have been here for years and for a while, classes where all we had and where likely only ever going to have till Yoshi took over. The idea being that all classes where important including crafting/gathering and you would be able to make a sort of custom class by merging skills from other classes. At the time the Job system was introduced, Yoshi himself claimed the distinction would be that classes would be more solo focused while Jobs would be party centric. That's why DRG would get a boost in damage but lose HP.
Currently, it seems they changed that distinction as jobs seem to be a direct improvement in spite of losing a slot or two for another class skill which on the whole is no big deal. So it's basically a power up hat you have no real reason to take off, even though you can. I suppose what we're seeing from SCH and summoner (whatever its abbreviation is, I don't remember) where the class can branch off into multiple jobs and you have to allocate points according to what you want more. Which, to me, is a bit less interesting but the game really seems to favor the 3 role structure so I can see why they want to focus on party play more.
