Best thing to see this is to search for bards up on the Lodestone. Just sift through until you see a male wearing the gear. That's what I do when I want to get a good look at how armor looks in-game.

I hardly ever play female ... never feels right. Id have to really have something that irks me about the male model for me to roll female. For example in AoC I rerolled to female after a while because I just didnt like the male animations or face model options.
In FFXIV however I started male but used my complimentary Phantasia Potion to switch because I just got tired of all the female only gear looking a lot better. Seriously, who wears swimsuits like that? Couldnt just throw some swiming shorts on hmm? Had to be extra tight speedos over regular swim shorts? Then there is the Snow costume ... WTF? Well ok that makes more sense but still, I wouldve preferred a Lightning-esque looking set for males instead of a costume for a character we care even less about and dislike even more than Lightning. Oh and that very effeminate Bard costume helped as well.
Ill probably change back to male eventually though... soon as we get a few more cool male costumes and if we ever get a decent looking Bard gear design.
I like the way the armor looks on females better. I like tough, kick-ass women. And if I've got to look at someone's ass for hours on end I'd rather look at a girl's than a guy's.
I main a male character, I usually do in online games where I'm given the choice to make my own character. I almost always make a female alt though, FFXIV is no exception. I also got her to ilvl 76 DRG, so I'm not really neglecting her. I made her originally so I could get the female versions of event gear along with the male sets.
In other games where you choose a character (say fighting games) it really depends. I usually end up playing female characters because they tend to be on the faster side (for example in Street Fighter games my mains are Ibuki, Chun Li, Cammy, and Sakura. Side note: USF4's 5th character is Decapre, was really disappointed until I saw gameplay. She might be my new main lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfsKVOuEyow )
In other games where you make a character, it's usually what I think fits best for the story/setting. Mass Effect (or rather Bioware games in general now that I think about it) I always go FemShep, but in like Demon's Souls (a game I need to get back to) I go male.
Simply because I would rather stare at a girl.
made a character similar to my wife and love my wife first name so used it ...and when she play she will make a male similar to me :P
Cause If I'm gonna be Haruka Tenoh I got to be a hot female chick. ;3
Lol, it's funny the responses. Females play female char's because they are females IRL. Guys have all kinds of cool different explanations as to why they enjoy tooning as the other gender.
(on topic because Gamemako asked!!!) I play a male character for many different reasons. I am a male, so that is part of it. I have always been drawn to strong heroes and protagonists, and felt like I could personify with them psychologically if not always physically. I am a natural born leader, and am usually the person taking charge of various situations. I feel like if I put my mind to something, I can excel at it (and usually do). This attitude bleeds into my gaming habits. If anyone I group with is sketchy about a certain fight, I always take the time to help explain. I enjoy being good at things and helping people who aren't as good, get better. I lead an FC, and all the active members tell me that I do a great job. I connect with all of these qualities as a male. By no means do I try to say that a female can't be as strong-willed, only that I can be myself much easier when represented as a male in-game also.
I don't need to be someone else when I represent myself in a game. I am very happy about who I am. :)
Because this character reminds me of my mother.
*stares straight into your soul*
I used to use a female character because i believe the class armors looked better on that gender. After fighting a losing battle with the girlfriend, I turned on my monitor to find my phial used and at the character recreation screen up with a note of "change it or else no more sexy time."
Although ridiculous, i did it. Mans got needs...a mans got needs..
I play female characters because they got better customization options in most games. Male characters seem to have so little customization options that is almost like "whats the point" Also Female Characters seem to have the better looking armor as Males get armor that looks plain. I will too use the reason of "I prefer to look at a female char for hours than a male char" its not a illogical reason nowadays either, the character models are starting to look more realistic as gaming graphics become more advance.
But I act myself when talking so you wouldn't know I play a female character unless you saw my character in the case when talking in FC chat. I will not act female because that just isn't right, I only bring this up because I do know there are people who do this sometimes.
I used to play guys in everything until I read a PvP comic that was essentially the "staring at an ass all day" argument. I thought that sounded reasonable, being the pervert that I am. ^^;
I played in 1.0 as a male char, and started ARR with the same. I never had any plans for an in game sex change. But then something awful happened. I got into the mid 40's with my BRD, and bought the Coliseum body and legs. If you've ever seen those pieces on a male character, then you know what I'm getting at. It looked TERRIBLE! I mean 100% god awful. I couldn't stand to look at my ugly BRD with that set, and even though both pieces are BiS at 44, I reverted to some lesser armor.
Then, I leveled WHM next. Again, in the mid 40's, and WHM AF on my char. Once again, it looked awful. But on the same day I got my short shorts, I also got my fantasia potion. I took one look at my WHM in AF and knew right away it would look miles better on a female char. Glad to say I was right about that. My ugly as sin WHM became cute overnight!
In single player games, I always play as a female char when I can. If I'm gonna have to stare at something for hours on end, it might as well be easy on the eyes! But this is the first time I've played as a female in an MMO. I had to make a "I have a penis in real life" macro to keep the creeps away. I feel really bad for real women playing this game, it's pathetic how many men are looking for a real life girlfriend in an MMO.
Because I feel female inside.
1. Boobies.
2. Boobies.
3. Boobies.
4. My main is usually always a guy though, so the females I make are alts.
5. Boobies.
I originally intended to make a male character, but all the faces just look weird/wrong/derpy. So I said eff it and made a female character.
I like how no-nonsense female highlanders are. They move like they mean it and have a posture that, unlike male Miqote, isn't a caricature of confidence.
Basically, they have really big boobs. http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/t/h/thumbsupplz.png
My first character is always male....however I end up making a female alt shortly after and they end up being my main character. I chose my little kitty girl because I found it funny that this little girl was beating the crap out of mobs as a pugilist....and then I found some of the armor sets pugilist gets as they're leveling...
Mine was originally based of my mithra in XI, I do have a male alt however for when I'm bored with endgame.
Because boys are yucky.
Not me though, I'm fantastic.
Well in most games, I just generally like the way gear looks female characters compared to the male counterparts, but the gear doesn't differentiate much in FFXIV.
To quote a friend of mine, the one that introduced me to MMOs, "If I'm gonna be staring at a character for 3+ hours a day, it might as well be hot."
But I've never trolled dudes, I make it pretty clear I'm a guy so I don't get creeped on. My character on this account is male, but my Legacy account that my GF took over is a female character.
All awesome replies or funny ones!...
Btw, I just checked the BRD gear for males and... Facepalm, I didn't know if cry or laugh. First of all my expression was like "Are you fucking kidding me?"
what if I'm female playing a male character :x?
I'm on the opposite end, I'm a female playing a male.
Reason being that I'm simply used to playing a male in most mmos, due to the costumes being sometimes too strippy for females and unwanted attention from boys.
I think it's also because I'm a rather tomboyish person in general and sometimes yearns for some of the fancy boy shoes that I can never wear.

Fabulously fantastic
Well, it is a funny fact of the MMORPG after all!
At least in my case, when I see female chars in game, I rarely rarely think the player behind is a girl. Thing that doesn't happen at all with the females players that have male char, they are ninja! Totally unnoticed... Nobody would suspect it after all!
I always roll female characters when given the option. Why? Easy on the eyes.
i was originally a male mithra (yes I said mithra LOL) xD use my Fantasia cause I was Bored. kinda like the way my character is now.
Like someone posted before, I don't really mind being honest about this.
The reason I play a female character in-game is because video games are a form of escapism for me.
While I'm totally fine with being a guy irl, I'm not all that into gender roles society has created, so in MMOs I like the explore the more feminine side of myself.
I mean, I usually spend quite some time just dressing my character up in the right clothes (can't wait for the vanity system to come out, I'll have so much fun with that) even though I'm not all that into fashion irl at all. Though I do joke 'bout being fabulous to piss off my best friend :3
I'm a female playing a female character because I want to relate to my character as an extension of myself playing the game.
I have thought a bit about rolling a male character but sometimes don't feel I could express myself fully as a male. That and they are smelly :P
Who knows, maybe karma will reroll me as a male in the next life XD.
Seems like the "easy on the eyes" / "if I'm going to be staring at someone's backside for hundreds of hours it should be appealing" reasons people have for rolling female characters is much the same reason why I (a female) like rolling male characters. I rolled a male elvaan in FFXI and did so again in FFXIV. Figured if I was going to be watching this character all day, why not make it something I would enjoy looking at? :)
I like potatoes (this is why I play female lalafell)
In reality male characters typically have a stiffness to them. While the little races like lalafell seem whimsical and are funny to play as. The female lalafell emotes are also pretty hilarious/cute.
Cuz I hate the male character designs, and the gear always looks better on females.
I play because I am a female and I love how cute female miqo'tes are! :)
