But Glamour sounds like a cheezy fashion thing, more cheesy than the aesthetician, at least he's got moves. We're talking "Serge" (from Beverly Hills Cop 3) levels of cheesy.

I didn't say I liked "Glamours" either, but "Mirage Prism" just screams jp fanboi/weeb. I mean, I guess its fine for the JP version since any English phrase can be "buzzworthy" (much like several anime phrases "sound better" to NA's in JP).

Off Topic: You really should go back and review Ferne's post if you think it boiled down to "we think the players are stupid, so we're going to use I, II, III, IV" as the reasoning included lack of consistency between suffixes and spell effects across different schools of magic, and went beyond just spell naming conventions.

On Topic: Glamour. It's a word often associated with magic and illusions in English folk tales, so I say roll with it.

a "glamour" or aesthetic/camouflage spell is pretty consistent with other fantasy novels. For example, The Kingkiller Chronicles and A Song of Ice and Fire both use the term. Even the Harry Potter series.

Sorry, but Mirage Prism is far too close to Moon Prism for my mind to not make the connection every time I hear it...

Honestly who cares what it's called officially? How often are you really going to reference it by its official name after the first week? You can call it whatever you want when you're talking with your friends, and I bet no matter what you call it people will understand what you mean. I just don't see an issue here at all. Nothing's stopping you from calling it whatever the hell you want.

When I hear the word "glamour" I think of 50year old women with huge hair and caked on makeup shopping at Bells for dresses with the biggest puffed up shoulders they can find.

Well I used to imagine that song in FFX-2 each time using the dressphere.

It would be nice to get this kind of video each time we switch jobs (with ability to turn it off to save time). I just cant imagine how it would look on a roegadyn... i need to stop myself from trying to envision it.

Mirage Prism sounds extremely clunky and awkward and forced. It sounds like something that has been roughly translated. Kind of reminds me of TERA or sailor moon. Personally I much prefer glamour, which by the way, can mean more things than just what you are thinking it means. They already use the word glamour in this game for certain veiled monsters.

I definitely like 'Mirage Prism' better...Glamour isn't a bad term, but it's so generic fantasy.

And the fact that it HAS already been used in-game kinda makes me like it less...seems weird to use the same word for personal fashion as you do for bad guys hiding from you...

I am 200% for this idea lol I heard them call it Mirage Prism and I could not get Sailor Moon out my head lol

Japanese names for these sort of things usually involve a bunch of random "power words" thrown together that usually just sound really pretentious.

I don't mind shortening it to something that isn't such a mouthful. Honestly there's only so many flowery ways you can label something that's in every MMO in existance.


That's kind of the point of "Localization". If it sounds stupid, retarded, cheesy, foreign, too mouthy, ect ect, you fix it up a bit.

"Mirage System" or simply "Mirage", or even "Mirage Crystal" sounds fine. Mirage Prism just sounds overcompensating personally.

Lol at a transformation sequence....but that will be nice, though nothing over the top. Maybe a flash of light and the emote of your character checking themselve out and approving or cheering. Those emotes already exists.

It's remind me to Red Alert 2, Prism Tank and Mirage Tank :D

Just add an option to either call it one or the other upon activating the quest/item/request to appease both sides, we have japanese voices, i'm sure they can make a placeholder word that the player himself selects to either be Mirage Prism or Glamour.

(Personally i prefer Mirage Prism aswell though.)

It may surprise some of you to learn that a great deal of official terminology is determined through a collaborative effort. The Japanese lore team frequently consults with the localization teams, asking them to provide suggestions, which are then localized into JP.

As some posters have observed, “glamour” has an archaic meaning of “magical illusion,” and we have used it in this fashion since 1.0. Given the lore behind this new system, it was an obvious choice for the English version.

However, “glamour” wasn’t an ideal word for the Japanese version. It doesn’t possess the desired archaic connotation, and when written in katakana, it can be misread as “grammar.”

Therefore, the item name “glamour prism” (グラマープリズム) was localized into “ミラージュプリズム” (mirage prism), which would more effectively convey the intended meaning to Japanese players.

I hope this clears up any lingering confusion as to why the names are different!

It completely went over my head how often Battlecrafts use the term "glamour" to describe hidden enemies.

It actually makes perfect sense now. I'm cool with it.

I totally disagree with the idea of adding another word to it just because the Japanese version does.

Given the nature of how they're doing it, it does make sense.

Either way, im probably still going to try to make a sailor moon outfit, and combine it with fists of wind or something as a macro for costume changes. Then yell for all my sailor scouts as we attack primals.

I don't think there is confusion. There is a dislike for things being different. Plenty of people feel offended when someone else tries to "help" them with localization.

Your explanation was helpful in redirecting this dislike, because you worded it like it is the Japanese version getting a localization, which does not concern us much.

I'll be calling it vanity so the official name can be whatever it wants.

But... glamour actually refers to what these prisms will do, while mirage is a totally different concept? Unless you plan on your character looking distorted from afar :S

More specifically, glamour is the magic that faeries use to superficially change the appearance of an object. This meaning dates back 300 years, and to this day "a magic spell" is the primary definition of glamour, with strong implications of being a disguise. While the MMO standard these days is to call it a vanity system, SE could not have picked a more perfect word to describe what they are doing.
