A "minor slip" is open to interpretation. That doesn't mean something minor could have massive consequences. I'd consider forgetting to activate shield oath a minor slip up. It's easy enough to do but can have massive reprecussions.


I'd bet most paladins have forgotten to activate shield oath at one point or another. We're all human and prone to err from time to time no matter what we do (in the virtual world or in the real world). Warriors at least notice their heath pool is low without defiance activated.

The minor slip as perceived by the tank equals omg you just majorly screwed us as percieved by the dps is exactly the reason there is fewer tanks...

You're right, and I'm not out to insult anyone or tell them they're wrong, or that I'm right. It's just, even something like that, yeah its a minor slip. But then continuing to not notice, because as a tank you should be aware of how much damage you take just as much as the healers are, is a pretty big screw-up. Unless you're one or two shot, that kind of slip is fixable before anything goes horribly wrong.

Fair enough. I was just curious as to what you considered a minor slip. Because minor to the tank is not minor to the rest of the group. Like, a tank failing to get aggro quickly. Maybe they forgot to use flash, like the other person said. A minor thing to the tank, but its not actually minor. It's a pretty big slip up. So, I get what you're saying but I thought you meant universally minor things, not minor from a tank's perspective.

In which case you're right, but I don't think that's really what pushes people away from wanting to play a tank. I'm sure it is true for some people, just like some people find tanks boring, and some people feel they have more responsibility and don't want that perceived additional pressure. It's all three, and you can alleviate some of the problems with boss mechanics, or fun, flashy abilities. I mean, I love tanking in TERA, but I hate it in WoW and ARR. People like different things, it's not just one thing that keeps tank populations low.

I just think everyone trying to blame the lack of tanks on one specific issue/reason is silly. There are a good handful of reasons, we can't just say people are afraid of responsibility, and that there is no possible way they could find it boring, or that they're afraid of their mistakes being more visible, or they don't like mitigation tanking. But that's all these threads ever turn into, because god forbid someone find something you (not you) like boring or uninteresting. I don't know, I'm not saying anyone is wrong, but people need to start understanding that it's not all about perceived responsibility.

No one tanking is an illusion. It just appears no one tanks due to lack of content and party sizes.

There are 2 party sizes,

4 Man Party: 1 Tank to 3 non Tanks
8 Man Party: 2 Tanks to 6 non Tanks

The problem is that in both of these party sizes, the ratio of tanks to non tanks is the same. It's always 1 tank to 3 non tanks, even in an eight man (because it's doubled).

I really don't know WTH SE was thinking when they thought 4 man and 8 man parties were a good size for parties.

It should be,

6, 12, and 18.

6:
1 Tank
1 Healer
4 DPS

12:
2 Tank
2 Healer
8 DPS

18:
4 Tank
4 Healer
12 DPS

It only appears there are few tanks because right now 4 dps are fighting for the same tank, but with a 6 man party like above all 4 of those dps would be with the 1 tank that the current system causes them to fight over.

So imagine a small party being 6 now. 4 dps would need 1 tank and 1 healer, much better than 4 dps being two 4 man's and each needing a tank and a healer. Then imagine an 8 man, which would now be a 12 man. 8 DPS would need 2 healers and 2 tanks, where as before 4 dps would be two different 8 mans each needing 2 tanks and 2 healers. Now imagine CT, instead of being 24 man, it would be an 18 man (easier to manage just like alliance size in ffxi) and would be 4 tanks and 4 healers to 12 dps. Where as before 12 dps would be 3 separate 8 mans each needing 2 tanks and 2 healers.

Mind you the 18 man alliance would only work if SE didn't segregate them into A, B, and C. And instead threw them all into one party UI.

It's to late for these changes, were stuck with 4 man and 8 mans, they will keep it that way, and we will be complaining about it long after this game dies.

Now take everything I just said and imagine how hard it will be to find a tank when SE releases a new job and it's a non tanking class. It will be FOTM, everyone will want to play it, and no one will want to tank. That basically comes down again to party size. And because everyone wants to play the new jobs, old jobs will get the boot, because there is no room in the party for one or more classes.

You will see Party Finder's like this

Tank, Tank, Sch, WHM, New JOb1, New JOb2, BRD, DRG: and you'll go "But I'm a BLM/MNK/SMN why can't I join? sniff"

Everytime they release new jobs they will flood and people will more or less have to level whatever is considered OP, because there won't be any room in the party for the UP classes and no one will save a spot for anything other than the OP classes, because this community has already proven that it will do whatever is the easiest "E.g. Tree Gltich In AK, Speed Running, T2 Enrage Strat, Double Bards (pre nerf), etc etc etc etc"

Let's also not forget that half the problem with finding people to tank, isn't a problem with tanks, it's a problem with the duty finder. I tank and am IL90 on both warrior and paladin. The only time your going to see me in a Duty Finder que is once a day for roullete's on GuildHeists. I don't need to run any other roullete for myth, I cap myth running BCB, CT, and EM Primals. I have statics for all of that, as do most tanks.

The duty finder is a luxury item. It's there to help you find a group when you can't find one through other means. It's not a rely on feature. It was never meant to replace traditional grouping, it's merely a tool for when traditional grouping isn't happening. (e.g. people are offline, you have no friends, people think your a jerk and won't run with you, etc etc etc).

And the party finder is merely a tool to help people form groups on there server instead of shouting "LF1M Tank, Titan EX, etc etc". Just because you make a group in the party finder doesn't mean someones going to fill it. In fact the other day I sat in troll just talking and running in circles for hours while I cooked dinner and the same PT was i the party finder for 3 hours LF 1 Tank while tanks are just standing around doing nothing. Maybe they just don't want to go to Garuda Ex!

But here's another big problem,

A lot of tanks have everything they need from a fight like Garuda Ex, and they don't need to run it, and have no reason to run it. So why would they join a party finder group to tank it. Sure I would help my FC if they asked me, but I'm not going to spend 100% of my free time helping people I don't know kill something I don't need. But I might want the caster ring for my BLM or alt class. I myself would gladly tank Titan Ex ALLLLLL night Long if I could have a fair shot at the blm earrings. If it's a farm run, people should be greeding gear, not needing it. There will always be someone in the group needing on what I want, as such I run my titan once a week and I'm done with it. I'm not going to spend 3 hours on a Titan Ex Kill for BLM earrings and watcha some BLM roll need on them, why should I?

So people tell me "You want blm gear, go on your BLM" So I do just that. I join a group on my IL80 BLM and sit there while we wait on a tank for 2 hours like everyone else. And there like "Ryios please tank", and I'm like "Are you going to greed on the earrings with me?" and they respond "Nah Im a need those", so I stay on my blm.

Hopefully people can see the above paradox and realize that an alternate looting system really is needed. You want tanks, I want loot on other classes. I can't run on my other classes because I'm needed to tank. What a delimma it is!

No matter how you cut or slice that scenario, someone has to do something they don't want to do. Either I have to tank and not get what I want for my BLM, or they have to greed the earrings, and if they don't greed them "wow, what a chat storm that will turn out to be."

This game needs alternative Loot Modes, and that problem would be solved.

Wow had loot master and free for all loot modes on day 1, how SE could leave out something so basic is beyond me.

lol. I have noticed that DPS will go full out, procs, etc, even if the tank hasn't even touched a boss. They see a tank running in and it's go time for them. Even so, some tanks get the boss back really quickly, but generally a few people will have been 1-hit in the process.

You'd think by level 50 the DPS will have calmed down and learned to wait a second, but I see this happen more often in lv 50 dungeons.

Funny. That's how I feel about most DPS classes and healing. I literally fell asleep in a dungeon while healing because it bored me to sleep. True story bro. Everyone has a preference for roles and none in more valid than another. There's a reason there are different roles and not just one; people are good at/find different roles in games entertaining.

But, yah, tanks have a responsibility that most others don't; Leading the party. And when things go wrong, you're more likely to take all of the blame. So is the responsibility of a leadership role. Not everyone can handle being a leader.

No one tanks because of all the rudeness. Dps cannot figure out who the tank is targeting unless marked. Instead of "helping" players to improve they poke and prod until that player is Vote-Kicked or Rage Quits. I have Tank, Dps and Healers all with relics running Coil. I understand the frustrations from all angles. This is why they give bonuses from roulettes. To help players advance.

If after politely offering suggestions to improve their play they do not even try to improve, then kick em. Remember every time you point a finger there are three pointing back at you. All the complaining and "you suck" comments do not help. It takes 42 face muscles to frown, but only 1 to smile. Help people to improve, because one day they might be amazing!

I've never had anyone be particularly rude to me. As anything.

If anything, people are more polite to me when I'm on Warrior than they are when I'm on Healer/DPS.

Yes Warriors have amazing low level hate. Paladin's are the primary target of animosity. Paladin's lose hate easily, and regain hate with some degree of difficulty. I never marked as a Warrior, because it didn't matter. Good luck pulling off a good warrior. As a Paladin in low level I have to mark the first 1 or 2, or it quickly becomes messy. I really hope they fix Paladins in low level dungeons. I have seen item level 91 tanks have issues in low level dungeons due to the level sync.

If you play as Tank Class you have the responsability of lead the way, Lead of run in most the cases and the life of your party depends of you. If you fail the entire group will die.

If you dont have "Leadership" Skills playing as tank will be insane difficult.

The constructive criticism is always welcome and you must Listen and learn of people know more than you. The Negative criticism can be happily ignored. Play with the purpose of learn and get better for yourself, dont play for "LIKE" to the others.

I think your stars are wrong melee DPS 2 stars Warrior 1 star. Paladins and healers 5 stars.

I hate tanking for Pugs since half the time the dps are brain dead and or rude if you tell them how to do the fight.

If you go to say CT you end up having a tank free for all on mobs half the time that will surly escalate quickly in to some one calling others noobs or worse.

Then any tiny little error made having a nice high risk of been called a noob or bad tank.

The player base is just nasty to tanks and yet fails to work out why tanks join a FC and stop playing with pugs.

Ill agree that i do see tanks get yelled at a lot for something that was not there prob but when you do start doing lvl 50 runs ppl are just more rude to everyone not just tanks hell some ppl just wanna rush other's attack random monsters like it's free for all. But at the end of the day it's the party your with that can make things good or bad so 1 play with ppl you know or 2 blast music and let the ignorance or rude ppl go by :D

For every coin there is two sides.

I may only have been playing two weeks (Vet MMOer however) but here's what I've noticed:

1. Some players are just awful, they are rude and just nasty. Ive seen Tanks behave jerkishly when I told them I'm new yet they go quiet when they realise I know what I'm doing.

2. Trolls roll tanks the most, why? Because they will always get a group of people they can troll. Ive experienced this 3 times already and every time it was a "Tank".

3. Some people may have ran into the trolls of point 2 and be having a bad day.

4. Some folks generally are new and have no idea how hate generation works, on the flipside they may know exactly how thus refer to point 2.

Its down to us to start fostering better relations and Blacklisting the trolls so the negative cycle cannot repeat.

I see a lot of people in this thread saying people don't tank because of attutude, trolls, and other people etc. When in reality thats a very small reason. The stuff I posted is 90% of it. We don't tank because we don't need to. We run bcb and get locked out, our one CT drop for the week, and 3 EM primals and were done, nothing else to tank. But theres plenty of stuff to do on our alts.

A new loot system like loot master, or free for all would fix that, then I would tank all the time and roll on loot with everyone else. Don't get me wrong though. Free For All would only be for PT Finder Farms and Queing in the Duty Finder. And you would have to agree to join a run set to free for all up front.

E.g. I imagine an option on the duty finder for loot modes

-Need Before Greed (what we have now)
-Free For All (Anyone can need anything that drops)
-Loot Master (One person is in charge of loot distribution 'PreMades Only').

It's not that I don't want to tank, its that I want to gear my BLM and me being on my BLM when I have an IL90 Tank doesn't solve any problems.

Warrior is my main job.
I MT lots of stuff.

Tanks have to be on the ball 100% of the time.
Speed run. Tank needs to know what to do.
Bosses, Tank needs to know what's coming up to pop a cool down before it happens.
Off tanking needs to know when to jump in.

KB, I MT I OT I get NE, Last 4 runs I did where I was not the MT the MT died. I jumped in Provoked. Started to MT, Told my hubby to take over tower I was controlling.

Now as a MNK... Go in without any real care in the world and just hit my marcos over and over and move side to back repeat.

Now as for WHM, Cure I II and rarely III but III is more usefull now., Medica I and II But never II before a mob spawns because then I get regen agro.

So when I want to play without caring what is going on just laid back and chilling. I pick MNK.

The only time I've ever had trouble as a PLD is when the DPS do something unexpected, like run off and hit something they aren't supposed to, and even then I can usually recover without too much trouble. Most of the time it's just some dork trying to rush through an instance, insisting on a speed run in a DF group. Honestly if I was going to do a speed run I wouldn't be using DF in the first place >_>

Having said that, while you do make a good point, I only stopped tanking due to lag spikes in dungeons. I dont think players should be forced into a group with a tank that loses aggro because his client isn't responding for 5 seconds or more. Until thats sorted, I wont be tanking again. Aside from that, I love it! Sure you get the few morons who think they're all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips just give them the usual "If you don't like it, you can leave if you prefer."

All up, there are many reasons some players dont tank. I dont think that players attitude is a sole reason but a little courtesy and common sense would definitely go a long way for a lotta them I'd think.

honestly, being a tank or healer takes a different type of person than just a dps. the reason people don't want to tank or heal is because they have the majority of responsibility of the party surviving on their shoulders. they do not want the responsibility nor do they want to be a leader. if a tank pulls mobs into the wrong location or turns them at the wrong time it's a wipe for the whole party. the more responsibility and advanced knowledge needed for a role in the party the less amount of people will be willing to do that role.

this is especially true with today's impatient, give it to me now, pew pew type of players. they want to do the bare minimum of effort needed to get things done as has been shown by people constantly complaining about things are too tough and should be lowered because their skill is quite bad. they don't want to put in any effort to improve their bad skills so they beg for the content that's already not hard to be made even easier.

I tried tanking and was treated like dirt so I only use my tank for t3 in coil and to troll the DF ques.

i love tanking....but i think its not just one reason people aren't tanking...i think its several

for one, i started MRD once and hated it because i found it too difficult to pick up initially. I wasn't good at keeping hate and kind of just put it back on the shelf and went healer. I did eventually go back and try again and got better at it and now i love WAR!

also, the most common thing i hear people say is "i would level a tank, but i don't want the responsibility." most of the time, those people choose DPS instead. but i wouldn't say its one reason in particular over any other.

Haven't honestly had issues Tanking. Sure, things can irk me but in the end, it's a game and it's not some random anon on this game being an asshat that's going to deter me away from playing the class.

I play the class, I think I do a good job (CDs are normally on rotation unless absolutely needed for a specific attack, Aggro is pretty much constant on me, don't go and cleave things in the face...), so that's all that I care for. Also, most of the time, I can take criticism very well so I tend to grow and learn from it.

Most people don't have the thick skin to deal with tanking. Period. It's a more stressful environment if you let it be. Otherwise, learn your role, preform well, don't stand in the fire...oh wait, that sounds like any class in any MMO really.

That is a half-truth, nothing more. It's the reason SOME people don't want to tank or heal.

The main reason I don't tank anymore is because I'm behind the curve and my ping is terrible (I have 25% of the attack bars to get out of the aoe) when on american servers. (I don't speak or want to play with primarily japanese people, bad experiences.)

The reason I stopped tanking originally was because I'd run an instance 15+ times to get my guild their gear and I do it again to help out one of my healer friends I made and I would get hotshots who refused to listen to my simple orders. Such as attack my target and stay behind me, being the primary ones. I would also have to deal with warriors who refused to offtank when I flat out told them I wasn't experienced enough (or with good enough ping) to handle all the extra adds. Ultimately it came down to ping and being unable to give SE my money due to their strict address requirements and (at that time) their horrendous support.

I think this notion comes more from the 'new class' of tanks. The people leveling or who just hit 50 now who are doing content with players who have more experience on said content. So tank walks in and says 'hey I'm new to tanking this' and people either moan, leave or start randomly pulling stuff etc. And if the tank loses aggro even once, they start to berate because well....the tank lost hate and admitted being new.

So just like a good tank shouldn't leave because people are new...and shouldn't speed run with people barely geared for the content, new tanks shouldn't be pushed to their breaking point.

But with the duty roulette basically handing you free exp every day for simply queueing as a tank, there's bound to be more people playing, and therefore learning the role. Of course not all of them can be good (I for example, strongly prefer healing but finished leveling PLD today), but just like DD's and Healers hate when tanks get all 'My way or else!' with the party...tanks hate it too. (And yes, as a healer I have had my fair share of bossy/elitiist tanks).

Tanking IS stressful. (you control the flow/pace of the dungeon>against DD/Healers who try real hard to mess that up +you know, holding hate)
Healing IS stressful. (you have no control over the flow/pace of the dungeon>have to fix everything 'stupid' that happens via heals+ you know, your actual maintain the tank 'expected' heals)

No one should be purposefully be making anyone else's in the groups job more difficult. So:

DD's maybe hold back from unleashing every single arrow/spear/nuke you have while the tank is STILL positioning the mobs...

Tanks, provoke or flash or throw something at the random mob that gets away when DD's get sloppy and attack the wrong target/healers overheal/oversleep.

Healers, you know, the tank will live if you don't keep them 100% full right...heal them and the party...but don't go bonkers. You can throw out a repose on an add (less damage on tank) or Aero/Stone inbetween heals for faster kills=less healing aggro on the add mobs to you...oh and Fluid Aura...know when to use it...don't make monks/tanks chase mobs that weren't actually eating your face.

But in general, be patient with each other...especially is someone is new/or playing a new party role to them. You weren't perfect your first time doing something...don't expect the other party members to be flawless either.

I tank all the time and I don't consider myself a leader of the group at all. The reality is that the responsibility in combat lies as much with the damage dealers as it does with the tanks and healers, so I don't think I have any more pressure on me than the guy with the spear.

This is really interesting to me, as I quit playing on American servers mostly because of lag, but also because of the sheer number of people with horrible attitudes. People quitting dungeons or primals after one wipe; screaming or swearing at those they thought were playing badly; the sheer entititlement and lack of patience.

Of course I met lovely players too, but they were the minority. Since being on my JP server, every single instance has been pleasant. People are patient and supportive! People aren't afraid to say it's their first time running something!

I actually got up the courage to try tanking recently.

Personally I didn't want to tank before because of the responsibility, and the reactions you get when you make a mistake. I play this game to relax and have fun, not to be abused!

I wish people would be more patient with new tanks/healers.

This was when I was in beta, I joined a jp server due to wanting to actually beta test and not just play the game (work got in the way) and the few dungeons I did do I kept on getting players who were exactly like you describe it. Granted I realize not all of them were japanese players, there were a plethora from the other south east asia countries. Same issues with american/english speaking except when dealing with english speakers I knew they understood me when I'd shout boss. Or even auto texted boss 15 times to indicate they should stop fighting the adds and assist the archer with the boss. (2/3 bad exp. Not alot to go off of but enough to make me shy away from that server.)

I'd love to tank, I have a "Garuda's scream" I'd love to test out in a dungeon, but with the recent latency issues I could tank Sastasha in i90 and still be holding a group back because of delays.

I tank mostly, though I also like to do DPS on my Lancer and plan to try Thaumaturge and Black Mage at some point. I find tanking to be somewhat stressful at times but mostly once I have learned the quirks of a dungeon to be fun and somewhat relaxing. I set the pace, I am responsible for much of the success based on my decisions, and I enjoy holding threat. I think why some people dislike tanking is simply that tanking does not really generate big numbers and there is a sense of responsibility that is very visible.

It's not boring (for warriors), it's not difficult, its the unrealistic pressure that your party members put on you. They expect you to perform 110% while all the healers do is sit back, occasionally heal you if you get half or just throw ss + regen. The dps just do their rotation and dodge (or eat) aoe's. We are watching our health, cool downs, predicting the next set of attacks so we can properly use the said cool down, maintain hate on the boss/adds/both and dodge aoe's. So we are already dealing with alot and we don't need rl hate from party members.

Really. You think your healers are just sitting back and occasionally healing you? For someone who's complaining about the unrealistic perceptions other have of their job, your perception of others' jobs seems even less based in reality.

I've played both tanks at 50 and think both are fun on different situations. I'm fine with tanking as long as I've done the dungeon/run 5+ times before. First time is always messy and possibly a wipe fest when I'm trying to figure out what to pull, where to pull, which way to make the mobs face etc. Darkhold and Wanderer's Palace were nightmares to me on first tries and I was ready to give up tanking, but my healer friend kept encouraging me and my tank friend gave me tips and I managed to pull through. I haven't tanked Coil or Extremes, and I don't plan to, as I leveled both tanks only to help my friends to level their classes through dungeons.

Going back to my scholar which is my main, is so relaxing. Can live happily in a bubble of ignorance and bliss. I didn't learn Crystal Tower tactics before I actually took my monk there even though I had done CT ~50 times on scholar before that. :D Though... Twintania is giving me grey hair as a scholar. x'D

Support roles are more crucial to the teams success it has been like that in every mmo. DD is the most easy and relaxing class to play hence why it's so popular.

let the idiots die, and tell ur healer to stop healing that dps......should only take so many deaths before they learn, or u can get vote kicked, and requeue and get into group with them and troll them :D
its how i would do it for idiots like that (or u can just report them if they vote kick u) just need to put them in their place
