I miss feeling SCARED

To the OP, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I don't think I'll ever forget the epic journey of trying to run my lvl 1 mule from Sandoria to Jeuno. I had to walk JUST the right path or risk aggro of lvl 30+ mobs, it was INTENSE. So far in ARR, the only fight that has really got my adrenaline up was the first time I beat Titan HM.

There is no danger in the open world, and you can teleport everywhere. Hell, the ONLY time you even use the airship is the one time they FORCE you to.

I miss waiting and actually riding the airship, I miss WHM taxis, I miss lvling DOWN, yes, I really do. It made you better.

I've started running dungeons in ARR with my UI hidden and only using animations as indications of abilities being used. It makes things a bit more fun.

Nothing is stopping you from riding airships in ARR. But if you're just looking to split hairs over the 'actually riding' part, then I don't know what to tell you other than to remind you that the airship in XI wasn't open world. It was instanced. I thought you didn't like instances?

No, it absolutely did not. It simply tacked on an extra X effective experience needed to hit the next level, which was an already arbitrary number on an upscaling curve. Are you honestly trying to tell me that a weaponskill you gain around level 66 takes exponentially more time to practice and master than one you get at level 5? You press a macro and you're done either way- the only differences are the animations and damage coefficients. And if anything, leveling down at 75 made you worse. If you didn't go into events with a buffer large enough to virtually never level down you were doing something terribly wrong.

Ultimately, all of the things you just listed are things which still exist in the game. If THOSE are the things you miss most about FFXI, why aren't you still playing it?

There is a big difference between needing to do something and being able to do something. Why would anyone use the airship or pay someone to teleport them in ARR when you can yourself? That's the point. And yes, that death penalty did make you better, dying doesn't mean anything in ARR.

I'm so sick of everyone saying if you miss XI so much why don't you go play it. Because it isn't the same game anymore, post Abysea it is nothing like it was at launch.

I sure do love riding Airships in XIV. Traveling 2 zones + Skipping a CS so I can save 50 gil. Really a different experience than simply teleporting from Limsa Aether to Gridania.

Let's just admit it all. We've gotten old. A new generation of "gamers" has kicked in. And that generation is linked to those that want to get everything but do very little for it to obtain it.

I really want those good old times back. Reading through this thread made me smile and remember all the fun moments I had. I still think that nothing is more entertaining and scary than to be followed by an army of goblins and other mobs I aggroed on the way. The shouts of people screaming for help as they were chased with a <pos>. Or the simple "TRAAIIIIIINNNNN!!!!!!". While we desperatily weaved ourselves through the scenery, hoping to put more distance between us and the mobs.

But what I really miss as a whole was the concept of "The major fun lies in the adventure to max level". It's been said and repeated tons of times. But now it's all about the joy of endgame.

I really want the thrill of adventure, exploration and progression back. Mind you, I am enjoying FFXIV. But I still miss those days.

Yes I agree with you completely, this post-WoW era of MMOs isn't what it used to be. When it takes you a year to level, that is a memorable experience, and things MATTERED. Who cares about anything between start and end-game when that journey is only a couple months, with gear getting replaced every day.

I miss feeling scared too ;; I wish we had creatures in the open world that were actually challenging to fight and stuff :( someday maybe! :o

So you never leveled WHM sub or used teleport rings or OP warps once those options became available? What about when you needed to get somewhere and nobody was offering teleports? Did you wait around for half an hour when you could've just taken a chocobo? You didn't work to become self-sufficient? You forever, for your entire FFXI career, remained reliant upon other players for your quick transportation needs? (Must have either been a short career, or a fairly unproductive one)

Maybe you're convinced it made YOU better. It had no impact on me outside of annoyance, and my progression raiding friends largely feel the same. Furthermore, if dying so much really made people better- why were people still so TERRIBLE at level 75? Did they just never die? But they were awful and died constantly! By your logic, shouldn't they have improved? Shouldn't they have improved at a much greater rate than I did, considering I rarely died and never leveled down? This isn't adding up...

Read those two passages very carefully and think.

If those things are objectively what you miss about FFXI, then you'll admit you're contradicting yourself. If you can't admit you're contradicting yourself, then you'll need to objectively admit you're just clinging to nostalgia and looking for examples within that rose-colored pocket of memories to validate said nostalgia.

One or the other, you decide.

I played XI for 6 years, had a total of over an entire year spent played on it in playtime which I actually played, I didn't sit logged in bazaaring items or anything.
I really probably enjoyed XI more then any other game I have ever played, I only played through Aht Urghan expansion however so I don't know how it changed past that. I'll never forget how truly rewarding it was to accomplish the stuff I did in that game, and I have so many amazing friends and memories from it I will remember it forever.
However this is a new game, in a new time for MMOs. I really enjoy 14, and as what I consider a hardcore player what I realize is we just need to set new challanges for ourselves. I myself have goals to complete all my level 50s, fully slot materia, craft all the items, do every quest, beat coil.
Also we need to remember this game is new. We don't know what to expect from it, I think if we wait we may be pleasantly surprised. Have faith my hardcore friends.

No I never leveled whm, because leveling in that game took a year, it wasn't an altaholic game like this. If I couldn't find one available, then that's when you got ready for a 30+ minute run somewhere (sometimes that included airship/chocobo travel), it was annoying, inconvenient, immersive, and awesome.

The thing all you anti-XI people don't get is, WE KNOW all those things were frustrating, and themselves, didn't add any FUN to the game. But that isn't what we miss!

We miss the feeling of frustration, the annoyances, the fear, which added to the eventual jubilation and accomplishment of finally achieving something in that game.

And there will always be bad players, no matter what penalty you place on death. The number of bad players past 40 in that game was SIGNIFICANTLY lower than any other game though.

You also can't seem to grasp the difference between being able to do something and needing to. Yes, those things we miss about XI, alot of them are still there, but WHY would anyone use them, it isn't needed. Yes I can use an airship, but it's a waste of time when you can teleport anywhere for free. Yes I know it costs money, but get real, it's so cheap it might as well be free. When you can do that, it's a waste of time and not needed to use an airship. But when that ability to teleport has been removed, you now have a reason to go use that airship, it is now a time SAVER.

Just to pop in here, I read time and time again the idea that devs can't create content fast enough for hard core gamers, and this is false EQ1 did it for a long long time and is still doing it. The thing is you can't have both casual ezmode content and accomplish this. Casuals can't deal with not being able to beat the hardest thing in the game with a duty finder and will troll to the ends of the earth until content is nerfed. If they designed ridiculously hard raid content like EQ1 then there would be time to put in more before people were finished, the problem is you can't cater to the casual player base with their necessity to be able to complete the hardest crap created by rolling their face on the keyboard and not having to communicate or formulate any sort of specific strategy.

I have seen a single raid boss kill 90....yes 90 players in a raid, now that is some hard sheet and that content was definitely not beat in a month.

1st of all this post got more attention than i imagined it would.
I would like to clear something up however. The Grind in XI is not what this game needs. That was obsurd and i honestly over the years i played only took 2 jobs to 75 and that was the level Cap before I quit. It took some serious hours and weeks or months to grind to 75 and no matter how many Sanction Rings and Exp Scrolls you used The Grind was just awful. No .. FFXIV has the leveling down perfect what it needs to do is quit with the FATE and return to party EXP and yes. this means GROUPING with one of each job class and > Pull TARGET mob and beat it down. The EXP can be chained and the amount of EXP should be = to that of what a FATE now earns you in return.
As a PARTY you camp ground should include an occasional ADD that SPOOKS the hell out of the group. Like ... magic aggro, link aggro, Weather condition aggro. Night time aggro . eg..Ghost , Bones , Boggy ,Bat. :cool:

Salvage was fun. Kept me in for 2 extra years.

I don't understand this old argument. Regardless of the amount of playtime I have available I still want things challenging, nothing makes me feel like Im just wasting my time more than lack of challenge.

People keep saying how super easy is what the market wants. Anyone been uh paying attention the last decade? Every MMO has FAILED that's gone this route, every single one now is free to play, why? If money is the bottom line then why make it "free" cause the alternative is going out of business.

Im pretty sure the "casual" (Hate that word, I don't have a lot of play time nowadays but I still don't want to sit and do something that's brainless and a waste of my time) crowd thinks they want no challenge, but yet they keep playing a game for 3 to 6 months, then on to the next. WHy? cause its not challenging enough to keep your attn

So whats wrong with content for both? I just don't understand why 100% of content must be easy or "casuals" complain? So basically every game must be made for the lowest common denominator? Is that honestly what playerbases are asking for?

How about content all the way around? I mean Im not a kid anymore, I want something fun and something that feels like I actually had to know my shit to get it done, Just not sure why it need to one size fits all.

I guess games must be designed so the very worst player can attaint he very best gear? They make a TON of those games their called single player

Yes, sadly that's exactly what's happening. When the majority of players ARE the lowest common denominator, of course they want the game catered to them.
