Please make them separate options. We should be able to turn off our name OR turn off the HP bar under our name. For example, I like having my name on. I like having HP bars on mobs. I don't like having an HP bar under my name.

I have a few related, though slightly off topic suggestions.
Personally, I'd like the option to hide all sorts of parts of the UI. Like I never use the buttons for the mouse in the bottom right corner (Menu, Loot, Emotes, you know, that one) and it bugs me that I can't get rid of it. I really feel boxed in by everything when I'm trying to view things. I also wish I could have the camera stay where ever I put it when I'm locked on a target. I'm a roegadyn, and I block my view a lot, and it really irritates me in combat that my camera ALWAYS tries to rotate behind me.
And then there's the chat lot... I like the chatlog hide option, but I wish I could set the time for it to disappear, or at least beable to hit a command to hide it at will. Also, in the chat box field... Can I have some control over which of the 2 boxes NPCs talk in? I keep 1 box for all around general chat, and 1 for chat only, and I hate that NPCs can only show up in my general box.
On the name topic, I like being able to see my name, people names, their ls, and if they're bazaaring. I understand people are wanting to just turn their own name off instead of doing /names which is already in the game to remove everything.
Also, while it's on my mind, and I'm thinking about it in a place I know it will get read, can where we move certain windows to PLEASE stay in memory? I hate the default location of the synthesis window as it VERY frequently blocks my view of the color of the orb. I have all sorts of problems with camera and window locations... :<
I would like the option to hide both, as I know what my name is and I already have a huge health bar on the screen for myself. And I would like to use the new HP bars, but I don't because I don't like seeing the HP bar above my characters head.
I would like the option to toggle my name on/off, linkshell crest on/off, bazarr icon on/off, hp bar on/off
also would like to see a toggle for other players names to be either standard size or toggle to 50% size reduction (or another % that looks ok, not really sure about 50% exactly) When I'm in crowded areas, Uldah, theres so many ppl around my whole screen is filled with names, I know i can turn off all names, but i want to be able to see others names, just make them smaller to occupy lees room on my screen.
I think the main thing is ppl want customization to the UI in general, everybody has a different way that the like to play and no one is wrong thats why its imporatant to be able to toggle a lot of different things, that way everyone is happy
Myself for instance, I would LOVE to see the option to toggle the (!) icons above ppls heads on screen, but keep the (!) in my mini map. In fact getting rid of the (!) above ppls heads would just about make me one f'n happy camper
Uhm.. i thought the command "/names off" hid your name or are we talking /anon like in FFXI?
Ah right. Oki doki.~
I agree with you greatly on much of your post about the UI and ability to toggle certain widgets off which have very little or no use to me. The mouse click widget is shoved into the corner of my screen personally and I wish I could simply disable it. Also the new targeting mode widget which becomes essentially worthless when in targeting mode a is always there as well for me. (All, Friendly, Enemy, Party, this widget)
Also agree on the chat log stuff. I made a post on certain filters which need to be changed as well but it seemed to be completely ignored. I'll say it here again though.
Players eating foods information is currently filtered under "System Messages" which is something most players cannot afford to filter in any chat. If I want to filter "Player X drinks a bottle of apple juice." I need to filter a variety of important information dialogues such as synthesis results, equipping weapons and gear, the items sold to NPC, and more.
Other players ranking/leveling up information and learned abilities is filtered under "Skills earned/actions learned by self". It's more then just common sense that these chat filter subjects should have been separated. I can't see my own skill point gains if I want to filter such dialogue spam like other players ranking up and learning skills which can appear as many lines.

As for the point of toggling my name on or off alone, if I had the choice I would turn my own name off for preference sake and to increase visibility of the area in front of me. Some peoples names could be very long with a long surname and block a decent amount of the horizon when moving forward. But the whole thing isn't a huge issue for me that needs to be stressed.
Although I would not be opposed to a way that filters off just all player names or just all NPC names for options sake. /names is too indiscriminate to use as a viable filter for the screen. More options the better when it comes to harmless features such as screen customization.
I'm not too bothered about toggling my name on/off. Although it would be nice to have that option for player and mob names have seperate toggle options and then a seperate toggle for your own name. I would also like to be able to turn the hp bar off for my character. The patch that made the hp smaller and less intrusive looking was a big help though the option would still be nice. As the number of these options grow, it would be great to have them eventually added to the config menu.
What would be nice for me to see is linkshell name. Since some linkshell crests that people have picked for their shells look so much alike I'd like a toggle on/off of the linkshell name underneath your own name. This is a feature in other MMOs however I do admit in the existing examples I've seen the guild names are horribly displayed. I'm sure though in ffxiv that it could be made to look presentable and still easy to read.
Another little idea which is more stupid and unneeded (not to mention more clutter around the character) would be to display your highest ranked or favoured craft next to your name somewhere. It would let people needing something repaired or crafted spot someone with that craft without really needing to shout or research online. And then go up to that person and ask them directly.
make it like Aion and RIFT you have an options to turn off and on more specific stuff
This is the explaination for Bayohne in simple words:
/names [on/off]: Manages the display of the names of every character, self included.
/nameself [on/off]: Manages the display of your character's name.
I would like to see my characters name hidden as well. HP/MP bars are fine. It is just our own names are so large that they block monster names that are in front of you and you can't click around easily without changing the camera angle.
I'd would like...
/name self (on/off)
/name party (on/off)
/name others (on/off)
/name npc (on/off)
/hpbar self (on/off)
/hpbar party (on/off)
/hpbar others (on/off)
/hpbar npc (on/off)
/lscrest self (on/off)
/lscrest party (on/off)
/lscrest others (on/off)
/bazaar&repair self (on/off)
/bazaar&repair party (on/off)
/bazaar&repair others (on/off)
It would also be nice to be able to drag your own LScrest, bazaar, repair icons to where ever you want on your screen.
Sub-targeting party members should highlight their name on UI.
I'd also like to be able to toggle the little picture next to leve quest objective off
Kind of a good one. I'd just like to know why would you hide the names of specifically the NPCs and Party when you can hide every name.
Why would you hide the crest of the linkshell, as well as the icons of buy/sell?
It's more like How could it be useful to hide those features.
I would like my name hidden. It messes with mouse targeting of mobs that are at close-mid range. The odds of selecting yourself is huge >.<
The current option is to turn all names off, which is typically what I do out in the field, but it does have some drawbacks.
Perhaps they should consider showing only the given name of characters. After all we don't often introduce ourselves with our first and last name. If you need to see the last name maybe have it appear when selecting that character. You could also have the given name and the initial of the surname.
Now I do think having options is good but too many options can be a detriment. The options screen gets too cluttered, you have to remember too many text commands. The user can feel a little overwhelmed.

If in a party, I'd leave party names on and hide others names. Because if I'm in a party I don't care about other people.
I'd hide LScrest, bazaar, repair on others because I don't care what peoples LScrest look like, if I really wanted to know what shell they are in I check it for LSname. I don't buy from bazaars or bother to repair other peoples stuff unless they ask.
I don't know when I'd want to hide NPC names but I think it should be an option just in case. :p
Gotcha.
Anyway, I was okay with hiding Other names, I just couldn't find a sense to hide Party and NPCs names =)
The only thing I don't know about is the LS crates and the Bazaar and Repair icons. I mean, it's not like they do harm with our vision, and seeing only names just gives me the impression of boredom in the displaying of the names. Other than that, it's always cool to see those; the LS crates because I can instantly know if that guy is the member of my linkshell or the linkshell I know or will know, and the other icons so I can be sure that when I select a person I will find a Bazaar button on my menu, and I'll also be sure that that player has things that needs to be fixed, and since that I like repairing other people's stuff, it's pretty handy and awesome.
Hide all party player names too considering we have that info on the party list and don't need it in front of us.
I've been wanting this since I first started playing. It's a very simple request.
And really, the more UI customization, the better. It can't hurt.
I was just doing a behest with a full party and i was thinking, my god, this is just a total mess. There is names and text everywhere it's difficult to actually see whats going on.
The whole interface needs tidying up if you ask me, names need to be smaller and with options to toggle them. A lot of the information on screen could be put elsewhere.
I don't like to bring WoW up but it does have a good interface all the information is on the bottom freeing up the rest of the screen. This is how it is with most MMO's.
I would also like the chat log to fade away after a while and appear again if something is said. Im suprised the interface is still the way it is since it was the biggest complaint in reviews. I know i made this thread about just hiding own name but there is lot of other things that need to change.
Chat log does fade away been there for a while now but the rest of that stuff would help
yes the chat log does go away if it stays idle long enough
I think in general people would appreciate more detailed control over exactly what information is displayed on the HUD. If you can think of something that could potentially be displayed or not, there should be an option for it.
I would like both an option to toggle the HP bar on just my own character, and an option to change the size of the HP bars (instead of being at the mercy of how big or small the dev team thinks they should be)
I personally hate the little hp bars over my head looks stupid i can see my own hp bar just fine on the hud
I think they just want to turn off their own name as it's obvious what your own name is. It's superfluous visual real estate. HP bars are important, but honestly, every single part of the UI should be able to be toggled on/off or resized independently. There are some things, especially as a veteran XI player, that I don't need that take up a lot of space on the screen. Mini map is great, but if I don't want to see it, I can still play the game and use the main map to quickly see where I need to go. You definitely don't need to get rid of it but having the option to turn it on/off is a win-win for everyone.
Maybe someone wants to take a screen shot of a conversation but doesn't want their name/mini-map/HP/MP/TP/Current Rank/Current Level/4 useless mouse hot-keys that controller players will never use/Calendar/Send/Receive/ or Status effects shown. Why not? As long as you can turn them back on in the configuration menu the player should be given the option, especially veteran players who know what facets of the UI are important and which ones are not, so that they can adapt their visual experience to their own playstyle.
Or maybe they just want to temporarily disable the chat log in cutscenes that repeat the exact same thing that the characters are already saying in their dialogue. The player should be given that option. There's only so much visual space on the screen for some players and not having the ability to disable a lot of these things really clutters the screen.
When I first heard that the UI was going to be completely customizable in early pre-release developer interviews, this is what I had in mind. The current customization options available are severely limited in comparison to some very old MMOs out there i.e. Anarchy Online.
Not to hijack the thread but I think the concepts are related. At the very least, there should be a keyboard command that toggles your own name off as, after 2 hours of seeing it on the screen, and always seeing it in linkshell chat from that point on, I don't think you'll forget it anytime soon.
You could put it in as an option in the config menu or just apply as you did the /display head "on/off" option.
The following is what I have in mind.
You could also just take out the "/display" and put the "/" right before the part of the UI you wanted to toggle.Quote:
/display chatlog1 (on/off)
/display chatlog2 (on/off)
/display rank (on/off)
/display physlevel (on/off)
/display hotkey (on/off)
/display hp (on/off)
/display mp (on/off)
/display tp (on/off)
/display time (on/off)
/display minimap (on/off)
/display selfname (on/off)
/display partyname (on/off)
/display pcname (on/off)
/display npcname (on/off)
/display enemyname (on/off)
/display names (on/off) [I know it's already there but you could use this format as well.]
/display actionbar (on/off)
Also while we're at it, make the logical extension for the rest of your gear, not just the head in the following format too:
Quote:
/display body (on/off)
/display feet (on/off)
/display hands (on/off)
/display waist (on/off)
/display legs (on/off)
/display accessories (on/off) [Different ones for each slot]
The point of hiding headgear is to let your hairstyle show. There's no similar (good) reason for the other slots. I don't want to see everyone running around appearing to be in the buff...Quote:
Also while we're at it, make the logical extension for the rest of your gear, not just the head in the following format too:
I am in favor of every slash /command that was mentioned in this thread, but I'm going to take a step further.
Make these options/toggles along with old ones available in the configuration menu in game. Its absurd that players are expected to memorize all these commands.
a name toggle option i think would make things a bit more immersive, because like someone before me said, you know your own name so having it above your head is absolutely redundant. display option = yes please.
Hurryap! !!!!
Agreed, I know my own name, don't need to see it anymore. It would be nice if it was out of the way so I can click on the mob instead of my name.
Also it would be cool if we could adjust the size of the names of everything else, I think they are over sized. When a party gets together the names are all just a mess all on top of one another. I would like to have a slider to adjust the names down so that they aren't much wider than the character.
I reeeealy like this idea!
I'm in support of the other people who have basically said we need chat filter type groupings extended to HP bars and names. There should be options for every "group" like enemy targets, currently engaged enemies, party members (and alliance eventually), non-party players, and of course yourself.
I am surprised the option to hide your own name wasn't there from the start and on by default. I'm also surprised something as simple as this hasn't been patched into the game yet. Thanks to whoever bumped this thread I guess it needed to be brought up again as we still don't have it. Anything FF XI had FF XIV should have, besides I thought it was standard for most MMOs to let you hide your name.
