Not if you're running as CNJ. The base class doesn't disappear just because you get the job. :)

You're always leveling your CNJ. WHM is a specialization. Think of WHM as a piece of equipment that you equip to your CNJ (because it is).
WHM doesn't have levels. Jobs dont' have levels. Only classes do.

Okay I think I'm getting my noobness out.
A conjurer level 50 is equal to WHM level 50, as in if I level my conjurer straight to 50, I put in my crystal, then I can get my 50 WHM quest yes (assuming I do all my 30+ quests as well)?
For me, I do the aero thing and try to heal whoever mobs are attacking (as they tend to be low on health, and it counts), including healing pets like Topaz Carbuncle. I'll sometimes get a stone I or II in, but that's normally if I claimed a mob somehow (as everyone stops attacking whatever I end up hitting first, for whatever reason). Otherwise, I heal NPC's as much as I can. If I'm there from the get-go, I tend to get gold. If I come in half way, I tend to get silver/gold. If I come in late, I get bronze.
I tested rezzing to see if that counted for anything (did so 3 times, after throwing a few aeros on the boss in the fate, along with smacking it with stone I and II a five times), but I only nabbed silver for that effort.
If you're grinding them, maybe try a Fate party? I haven't done those, but I figure it'd help get consistent gold (Still hoping SE lets rezzing count for participation in a FATE, it pains me to leave the corpses there until all's done... unless I'm an ACN, since I can DoT everything and let my pet get me credit while I rez <.<)
On my CNJ (and ACN for that matter) it's all about tab-aero. Don't need it to tick since it's instant and does upfront dmg. Unless I get to a FATE when it's already halfway over, I almost always get a gold.
You can always join a fate party with a bunch of DDs that will do it for you.
I just hit tab and aero all the time, constantly. If its a boss mob, I aero once and then start healing the tank. Once you tag the boss mob, healing counts towards the gold.
For me personally, FATEs feel unbalanced. It's too many people (still, even though billing kicked in) and the mobs are real pushovers. I can see FATEs shine when I find one in a secluded area where I'm (almost) alone. There it is fun and I even feel (slightly) challenged. So, for me FATEs aren't entirely bad per se. But at the moment I'd rather avoid them. They're needlessly frustration and grindy at the moment. I hope SE does something about it. :(
