Adding the AFK timer will go a long way into solving a large portion of the problems both during actual game play and in the lobby server. Concurrent user base will drop creating a situation were the lobby server isn't constantly being bombarded by thousands of players spamming the 0 key to try and hit that minute of time when the queue opens.

I don't like the new server idea, at the end of the days, it's going to grow empty and there will be a merge.
I feel like expanding current servers will help out, the first day, people coulda log because people were actively playing and it was full.
This was before the masse problems, it's just gotten worse from there on. In following months AFK probably won't be needed as much but something has to happen now. So I wouldn't mind it.

Are you retarded? Let's say you remove every AFK player. Then what? The lobby will magically load now? The server lists are going to properly load and update now? You'll get to create characters on servers that SE banned new characters from? The queue will be longer than just a handful of people? Nope.

I haven't been able to play FFXIV for more than an hour since launch without getting hit up with disconnects and other stupid crap like that, I'm a legacy member, I've been waiting quite a while for this and to hit "Server full" or "connection to lobby has been lost" error messages every time I try to log in around life/work is REALLY infuriating. I understand you guys didn't expect this sort of turnout, but at the very least show us that you've made SOME progress in letting your paying customers with time constraints play.

My idea was not a mid-day purge. My idea was a 3am PDT purge. I had made a thread before about it (I can see it went nowhere) at 3am people are either asleep, should be asleep, or EU players that'll log back, but on an NA server they won't be NUMEROUS. There shouldn't be much of a problem. and the issue isn't that's it's even a holiday the issue is the fact that there is over ten people afk at every friggin crystal.

Yeah there will be some issue logging back (that lovely flow) but after the initial surge it will be a trickle....active players will be able to log in w/o having to spam the server thus creating less stress on the server thus the server will be able to update more readily. The character thing won't be solved, sure, but that's out of my hands. And the queue is small due to the ass of server load from all the logins and the IT people have to keep it SO small because they are trying not to overflow the realms (See open beta error 3102)

Purge afk > less people > less stress > easier to expand queue size for a while

People here have so much pent up anger.

Actually yes, the lobby server would load. Keep in mind that the majority of the servers come up listed as:

The next step is to be kicked out of the lobby entirely only to load back in. Thousands upon thousands of players are doing this at the same time causing lots of stress on the lobby server giving it errors as it attempts to connect so many people at the same time over and over. Either adding a proper queue system or getting rid of the concurrent AFK player base will open these servers, players will log into and out of the lobby a single time and the lobby server won't be pushed to it's limits day in and day out.
