If You Could Log-in Without Difficulty Would AFK'rs Matter?

SE was not ready for this level of enthusiasm. They should have been. It was there plain as day that they had a lot of people excited and interested in the game. But blaming the players for playing, within the realm of legality and not violating the ToS, that is nonsense. The game really does not need AFK kick timers, resets, voodoo, or whatever. People just need to accept life isn't fair, thus, places that mimic the real world (MMOs do so in terms of interactions) should be the same. Let it get sorted out, and then enjoy the game. Or, you can rage-quit, go on your merry way and curse the game. You will likely come back to give it a try at some point, because lets face it, there is not much new and shiny coming out that is pretty much the same as something else.

Either way, I just wanted to assuage my curiosity more than anything else.

Even if it weren't, they'd be an eyesore.

Seeing some dude flashing their full Allegan and AFKing 24/7 to immortalize himself... waste of space. Cool at first, but then you wonder if that guy ever moves after awhile.

It absolutely would matter. People sitting AFK for long periods of time puts more strain on the servers which reduces performance for everybody. You may not think that one person going AFK is a big deal to the server but it does add up. The only reason I can think of to not kick AFKers if if we had a character store function like we did in 1.0. We do not...

While I think it would help to alleviate the problem, I do not think it would outright solve the problem. But to be honest, AFK timers for kick out have been an industry standard for MMOs for a long while. I'm kind of surprised that SE didn't implement one for ARR.

Completely in agreement. Fix the servers and the issues becomes moot. Yet people blame the people who are working within the confines of the system for their own enjoyment. I doubt they feel the same way when they get in, and then subsequently stay in for a long as possible. If they wanted to help, I wonder if they considered not logging in at all for a week. I mean by that measure the servers would be less stressed. Who is to say which persons time and money is worth more than any other.

is afkers the problem? no. but ARE they making the problem worse? yes. putting a auto kick system is nothing new to mmos so why people whine here about it makes zero sense since there is no more bazzar for your character anyway. so yeah i go yay for having auto kick. heck most times i log out at a sanct there are the SAME EXACT PEOPLE STILL THERE IN THE SAME EXACT SPOT I LOGGED -.-!! so yea thats a major waste of space for people that want to log in. so is going to ultimately fix the problem of error 1017 or 2002? prolly not. but can it help make it better during peak times? i would think so.

remember its not 1 or 50 people doing this. its 100s of people doing this to save their spot. in short not playing till tomorrow? then log and let someone else in. damn people come on share the love of the game dont hog it -.-

So, a person AFK is taking up more active resources than someone using abilities, crafting, etc? The strain on the servers is from more active players I would think. If we compared the two (someone who ran a private server of some game verify this) I doubt that several people AFK = one active player (fighting, farming, questing, etc) in terms of server load and stress/strain. Correct me if I am wrong. That an AFK individual is taking up a spot in the server logged-in cap is something else entirely. The duty finder and the instance servers were failing/crashing were the if I recall correctly. So, unless I misunderstand the game is design, that is not related to a AFK players standing still doing nothing. So, unless I am mistaken, your statement, while not completely false, is misleading and not entirely factual.

You miss the point though. Someone AFK isn't doing anything. That's wasting resources. Resources which, depending on the kind of server and how it is set up, may or may not be effecting the game for everybody else. If they were actively doing something or even passively doing something like macro crafting then that would be different. In all honesty I doubt that a few hundred AFK people is going to do a damned thing to anybody who is actually playing but when you are talking about server stability and performance you want everything you can get. I would also agree that as long as there is a population cap then sitting AFK all day should be discouraged for obvious reasons.
