The purpose of them (and the point of most roleplaying games in general) is to customize your character as you see fit, so not everybody is a carbon copy of one another. It's not fun to see every single person with the exact same gear and mounts.

I always thought Goobs should be slower but stronger than chocos. Maybe even impossible to be knocked off of, or much less likely.
Neither is it fun to see people wearing garbage and being effective, or having a turtle and running the speed of a chocobo.
You can scale content and make it biased - as WoW did with its mounts. Even though there are "stats" there is still a huge variety of mounts used at max level. Customization != everything has to be the same.
Pretty sure they said all mounts would basically be the same and just have aesthetic differences. Making them with varied stats would then cause them to throw them into content and we'll end up having to do content to get "the best mounts" and it's just going to be messy.
Yeah they did say they will all be the same. Nothing unique about any of them except for "looks".
I assume there is still going to be content for mounts - though no one is really going to care about them except for which color matches their outfit or most "epic" looking.

How boring and bland can someone be...Yoshi-P's engine is limitless so nothing is waste of development or resource all they require is time and fan requests, period.
Now for the OP ..i agree mounts should have some type of difference other than looks ..As i said in another thread Legacy Chocobo should be the fastest mount :p

I thought the idea was Chocobo are our main mounts and can fight and have a tree system for healer,tank,dps and other mounts are just for show does noting but look pretty.
