I think this is a bit of a translation issue since the fan translation said data centers and the SE translation said servers. I think we all need to chill out and wait for some actual clarification on the matter before we worry too much about this.

Do me a favor. Go to Speedtest.net and set your ping destination to "Tokyo", then do another test and set it to the city closest to you.
Afterwards, let me know the difference in how many "ms" your ping replies back to Tokyo and to your local area.
See if that makes it any more clearer for you.
Could be; but personally if I wasn't in North America; and I had a choice to not play on a server that contained some people from this forum. I would leave.
Some people aren't very tactful (myself included sometimes) but I find while the Japanese do complain they do so for the most part with respect and dignity; unlike the teenie-boppers on here.
I have no idea what you're talking about, so I will just smile and nod and go on my merry way. In retrospect though it wouldn't make sense to put so much work into auto-trans if they were planning on segregation. I would prefer segregation, as elexia pointed out it just makes sense. With the reduction of latency and the implementation of a better auto-translation function (which still needs much improvement), playing with Japanese won't be so bad.
Uhmmm let me clarify.
Yoshi said they aren't changing the realms (balmung will stay balmung, masamune will stay masamune, etc).
So if the realms will be the same, and your client will connect to a data server that's closest to you, it just means that your character will be handled by that server, but they all get pooled together. So nothing changes, just that you get no latency.
They force segregation the game will fail, end of story. A lot of people like FFXIV, and by extension FFXI because you can play with people all over the world. I have played in multi-national linkshells all my FFXIV and FFXI career, and I love it, I have made a lot of friends in NA from these, and if I have the chance there are people I would like to meet across the pond.
I paticularly have a friend from FFXI who lives in NA and she wants to play come PS3 release, if I cannot play with her come PS3 release I will quit, and I will no longer trust SE. You might say "well join a NA server then" so what do I do most of my free time when I am playing on a dead server?
If they give us the choice I will join an international server (and hope there are enough who aren't xenophobes) FFXI worked well as an international MMO, so will FFXIV. A mix of international and regional servers can become a disaster for SE, if one of them is dead.
Tell me who would quit right now if SE said "We are only having intentional servers".
Now tell me who would quit right now if SE said "We are only having regional server".
I bet the latter would get more attention.
People clearly don't understand the concept of DATACENTER... has nothing to do with players beings isolated from other players. It just means that I no longer have to click a button and wait for the command to go to Japan before I get a response... BUT if for some reason I travel to Japan I can select to have my game connect to the data center in JP.
This message board has some of the most uninformed and over-reacting people I've ever seen... Goodness.
