I consider Ranjit is the worst thing in ShB both in term of story and gameplay. Heck if I'm being bold I would even claim he's the worst thing ever in FF14. Very happy we didn't see another Ranjit in EW.
And it would have been ok if that was the last time we fought him. He should have been Thrance's trophy. In a way, Ranjit was the antithesis to Thrance in term they're both guardian of sort to Rin. Putting him in front of the WoL again kinda break the 4th wall for me, you know the dev put him there simply because they forced the player to lose to Ranjit for no reason earlier so they obligated to give the WoL the last say. It makes no sense in term of thematic writing.Quote:

Thancred is a bloody pulp whos heart is about to explode but oh deus ex machina of the plot no.477659, Urianger miraculously appears from nowhere to mend Thancred wounds. And guess what else? Ranjits still alive! You kill him one Instance later! It was a total waste of time, and Ranjit wasnt even a dungeon boss despite all the build up!
Totally, utterly worthless, every single seen with Ranjit was padding out the wazoo. -

I mean, I get the intent behind Ran'jit's character. He's supposed to be a fallen hero, who's spent so long fighting the sin eaters and watching Minfilias die that it's broken him, convincing him that it's hopeless and the best he can do is enforce peace so at least the people of Eulmore can ride out the end of the world in peace and pleasure because there's just nothing else that can be done. The problem is that he's never shown actually doing anything other than being an arrogant dick. We never really get to know him or see who he actually is, so it falls kinda flat. Kinda reminded me of the Heavens' Ward.

But those are not even the worst thing. After Endwalker Ranjit became even a worse in retrospect. The Scion being there as botched summon I can understand, but the WoL was summoned to the first in flesh and blood. As a being whose soul had 3-4 rejoining, even without accounting the experience, the raw power balance would be completely lopsided in the WoL's favor.

Ranjit was first time writers gave us a story with actually subtle (by ff14 standard) storytelling where you use hints to piece together how Ranjit came to be the way he did. And the only response community at large gave is "literally who". And then same community wonders why neither writers nor game designers respect their intelligence. I love the story either way, but you can't convince me there's any subtlety in it. Ranjit's story is biggest example, and with reception he got? Probably last.
