This game has exactly the same "racial traits" system as FFXI already. The two or three points of a stat simply amount to nothing when your main stat is in the thousands
The idea is sound, would not be opposed to traits so long as it dose not give one race an edge over the others in any serious way. Whilst ESO Wood Elf traits do not really give any big boosts as far as I remember, I do recall there been controversy over I think Argonians getting healing buffs. We are in a playerscape where people will completly upheave their character and spend money on race changes if it gives even a 1% bonus to healing/DPS etc.
Nothing good comes out of it. WoW still suffers the consequences of having racial traits. Too much of a bother to balance and even if you aren't a 24/7 end game raider, as long as you do any sort of endgame content, you will feel in disadvantage for choosing a race that isn't beneficial for your job of choice in PvE.
There's a reason why everyone plays Horde in WoW. I rather not see a world filled with only Lalafells because they decided give them an ability that grants +3% crit for 15 seconds.
I am not a fan of them, I always feel compelled to pick something because of the racial then.
And sometimes it's even kinda enforced, I know that it was in WoW Classic when I went back at least especially for Classes like Priests where they also got unique spells.
In the end of the day I think it just in effect makes for less choice.
I think that SWTOR does it the best because the racials are fluff, Twi'lek gets a unique dance and Humans get a Rally emote.
In FFXIV we get unique cultural sets.
