    Race specific traits?

I'm curious how everyone would feel about race specific traits? Games like ESO already have racial skills such as Acrobat for Wood Elf that Decreases your fall damage taken by 10%. obviously it shouldn't be anything major such as extra spells but something simple that could make choosing your race a bit more than "this one looks the cutest"

    No, thank you.
I prefer that looking cute or badass is the only consideration you need for picking a cute or badass looking character.

except the ESO team has taken painful steps to erase the amount of impact those racial traits have, if it wasnt for the fact that the addition of race traits is carryover from the rest of the elder scrolls games, they wouldn't have given them racial passives at all. so no thank you.

As long as they give players an advantage when it comes to combat or tradecraft.

FFXI had it & it resulted on such horrendous pre-determined job/class selection based on race & that influenced player’s mindset to enforce “Meta” which was truly awful

(E.g Elvaans had unusual low accuracy in enchange for higher charisma & strength/ Mithras higher dexterity & Agi i think over intelligence & Galkas very low MP in exchange for HP…..you could sort of make senses what jobs may ought to resonate best with certain races).

On the other hand I embrace ESO’s racial traits in which it doesn’t undermine or outperform other jobs but just a slight bonus (without repercussions) to their respected racial identity.

This I can sort of foresee to be a cool assest to serve as a minor bonus without having one over the other branded as a “Meta” by elite players (without disrespecting) as FFXI & WoW similarly did.

FFXIV 1.0 had this too but it was less relevant and that choice of Guardian deity better influenced stats (via elemental attributes), which worked just as poorly. Between that and the aforementioned problems that FFXI's racial differences had, and you can see why Yoshi eventually scrapped the remnants of this here in FFXIV, and for good reason. It just doesn't work in practice because players choose the best outcome as the meta naturally, something Yoshi has been actively trying to eliminate or avoid in ARR.

The idea is sound, would not be opposed to traits so long as it dose not give one race an edge over the others in any serious way. Whilst ESO Wood Elf traits do not really give any big boosts as far as I remember, I do recall there been controversy over I think Argonians getting healing buffs. We are in a playerscape where people will completly upheave their character and spend money on race changes if it gives even a 1% bonus to healing/DPS etc.

I'm more of a believer that the species/race you choose should be, purely, cosmetic in choice. It's never felt good to play a game wherein I want to be x but I want to play y class and the combination I like the most aesthetically, is one of the worst. It always feels like a very arbitrary limitation that tends to reference "lore", but that's also a flimsy stance since not everyone in a particular race/species would be purely homogeneous and behave the exact same and thus not all individuals would have The Same Strengths, so forcing the issue makes it feel even less realistic than what's implied and is more of an old relic from D&D than anything else.

If the traits are useless, then I'd ask why spend time developing them instead of developing something more interesting?

we had that with minimum attributes and not even hardcore raiders cared about it.
