And even with the legacy players they got special cutscenes and the like where all the major NPCs remembered them as the Hero of Cartenau

Yeah, this is, overall, my view. Most of Shadowbringers is putting forward concepts that are at odds with this being the right and satisfying conclusion; it's just that the guy standing in opposition to that is Emet-Selch, who 'has never lied' (or so he says).
I do think we'll pick up on 'just what the hell was Azem up to', but I don't think we'll be literally embodying and becoming them, just following in their footsteps (or footfalls, there we go, I've tied in the expansion theme).
It wouldn't be taking a page out of that book. Wherever we go next, we won't have all the old faces we're used to odds are, we'll be seeing new people, creating a new team, etc. Crafting a new legend for ourselves, something we can't do with the old baggage. We're still going to have Cid and the Garlond Ironworks, we're still gonna see Rowena (she won't let her biggest moneymaker disappear), we're still likely to have a few Scion friends tag along (likely Alisaie and Tataru). But again, a lot of people will not remember us as the WoL, but still associate us with things we did that weren't beyond the normal person's means, such as helping end the war in Ishgard (but we won't have been the one who killed Thordon in their minds), freeing Bozja (we were just a soldier there), helping free Ala Mhigo (but we weren't the one who killed Zenos or Shinryu in their memories), etc.
The job trainers will remember us as an individual, that random person you got a cat out of a tree for will remember you doing it, etc. But the big gigantic things, namely world saving and primal slaying, you will not be remembered for. This will not result in us being a cog in the wheel, considering again, people will remember the more down to earth things we did. So us helping fight through the Vault? Will be remembered. Us fighting through Ala Mhigo to pave a path to Zenos? Remembered. Us pushing through Doma Castle? Remembered. But us killing Thordon? Wasn't us, was the WoL. Us killing Zenos and Shinryu? Wasn't us, was the WoL.
That is not a cog in the wheel, as all the rulers will still recognize what we did, still know us as an individual. The people will still know us. However the WoL's godlike feats will be disconnected from us in their memories. In their memories, they'd see us WITH the WoL clearing the path. They'd see us as an individual who was friends with the WoL and knew them. But they'd not see us as the WoL. I hope that cleared up what I was thinking, anyway.
I’m sorry... I don’t mean to demean your idea, but that sounds awful. I put the time into this story, and gotten to love these character and the deeds I performed with them. I’m proud of the things I’ve accomplished over the years. It would drive me absolutely bonkers if all of a sudden people in the game started treating me like how you outlined in your post.
I LIKE being the Warrior of Light. I do not want to go back to being another adventurer and have my past deeds detached from me. That would just make me super sad.
Then here's my question for all 3 of you. How are we going to live up to that moniker after we're depowered and the threat is over at the conclusion of Endwalker? It's not going to be possible to, and we all know it's very likely we're going to get depowered of the Blessing and our powers of Azem.
We'll be living in the shadow of our former power, and we all know what we used to be able to will KEEP being brought up, either by us the players or the NPCs. Would you like to be constantly reminded of things you can no longer do in story? Would you like to be looked down on by NPCs because you were unable to do something you used to be able to do? To be blamed by the NPCs who don't know you're unable to do that storywise anymore?
Exactly. A lot of stuff we can do on our own merits. The "blessing" mostly protected us from the Ascians, which after Endwalker won't really be much a threat. We have zero idea how Endwalker is going to handle us and our power levels, but I'm pretty sure we could still live up to it.
Either way... basically taking the last few years and invalidating it would just feel awful. I put the work into saving these people. I don't want to be remembered as "just a friend."
Edit: Besides, it's not like we did all this stuff alone anyway. Sure, we're the face of everything, but we've had help every step of the way. I just want to be remembered for who I am, and what I did. Not have people have partial amnesia and just thinking of me as being there, but not being me.
