That's not an inherently bad thing.
Don't worry about being able to do whatever next on release. Enjoy the journey, rushing to get caught up in FF14 is a miserable time.

This. One of the great things about this game is that almost all content will remain relevant or viable always. Take your time, have fun and when you finally get to EW MSQ it'll be all the sweeter :)
Plus, there's a lot of changes that aren't story related like mViera, combat changes, new jobs... Still a lot to do with EW before reaching end of MSQ.
I think I’ll get to EW in about two years. I keep getting sidetracked by crafting, gathering, alt jobs, maps, Fate nights, side quests, my Lalafell alt… I love it! Sounds like you’re having fun too :)
A lot of responses here feel disingenuous, borderline on trolling. I am about halfway through Stormblood and I understand where the OP is coming from. Of course all the fluff and stuff isn't going anywhere. Golden Saucer isnt going anywhere, alt jobs arent going anywhere, RP isnt going anywhere, etc. etc. But its perfectly natural to feel fomo because there is something to be said for being there ready with everyone on launch day. Especially with the recent growth of the game, leading into what is the final expansion of the current story arc, it would really suck and feel bad to not be there with your friends/FC whatever the day Endwalker releases.
Just hang in there, focus on MSQ. Its hard but im doing it too and enjoying it.
Take your time, the first couple weeks of the new expansion are going to be incredibly hectic and insanely busy.
You can just go at your own pace, chill and by the time you reach Endwalker it’ll be a lot more calmer :)
Fomo of what exacly? Nothing is going away. Nothing that requires you to be there with the rest of us on day 1.
Take your time which been the general concensus in this thread so I don't understand what you think is "disingenuous" and borderline on trolling.
But you're free to enlighten me.
Calm isn't necessarily good though in an MMO. Some of my most exciting memories in MMOs and gaming in general where big giant scenes with everyone there ready to go with some new patch or event, that the servers may or not be able to handle. The disconnects are frustrating at the time but looking back its still good memories.
There is no good solution on that though, unless you make people skip all story to get into the current (like wow does), but in a storydriven MMO like FFXIV, that wouldn't work - not in a good way anyway.
So if you been away from the game like OP said for years or just joined the game, how would you realistically be ready for the next expansion day 1? You wouldn't.
Being there day 1 is exciting. Its same the feel as standing in line to pick up a pre-order game, or waiting to get into a con. (pre-pandemic anyway)
If hanging out being part of video game history is something that truly does not appeal to someone, then I guess I could see it not actually trolling. Otherwise I genuinely feel sorry for someone who wants to be there day one and can't be. Just power through MSQ and one job if they are in Stormblood that should still be doable at this point.
