This is how it works. You should receive the chat message "Auto-demolition process for estate is halted" upon entry, so long as you have a timer ticking.
You can view this timer on CTRL + U timers window, estate tab.
Keep in mind that tenants cannot reset personal homes, only the owner.
That's how it's supposed to work but there definitely have been situations where something has glitched and it doesn't register the entry unless the owner interacts with something. I witnessed that myself recently as a tenant watching the owner enter the house but the demo notice in Timers did not reset for either of us until he interacted with his summoning bell.
Interaction is just a quick extra step to be on the safe side if you can't be certain entry reset the timer.
I feel your pain! I'd finally bought and decorated my little cottage when I was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and couldn't play for long enough that I lost my house. It upset me enough that I let my sub lapse and didn't come back to the game for years after. I hope you have the chance to get another one someday.
I'm not sure if interaction is required. I relocated my house earlier this year and haven't been arsed to re-decorate it yet so its empty on the inside but I go inside every week or so and have to to get an email about losing it.
Interaction isn't supposed to be required, just entering. For some reason, that doesn't always work.
I have to admit I was a skeptical about the claims from those who would say they had been in their house in the last few weeks or whatever until I saw it happen with a friend's house where my alt was a tenant. I had told him the demo notice was in timers and he said "but I just went inside yesterday". He goes in again - we both still see the demo notice. He clicked on his Summoning Bell - the notice disappeared for both of us.
So interact with something just to be on the safe side. Most people have a Summoning Bell in their house so that's a good choice.
Sorry to hear about your house my friend.
For future references make sure u interact with something inside your house, like moving furniture around or checking a retainer or a shop NPC u put in there.
I also hope the best for your brother and you / your family as well, I helped take care of my mom when she was alive cause she had Multiple Scorosis.
