Sarcastic, you say, but dear goodness I needed those last night for the Lv50 archer in Halatali who kept fetching more enemies for the newbie tank...

I don't know about you, but I use it a lot to save people during runs in LoTA. It's very useful when people are new to a run and healers are saving them from a mechanic they aren't aware of, or when needing to rescue a BLM who doesn't want to move from his leylines and wants to finish casting that Fire spell and rather eat another mechanic than stop casting. And yes, if I see the tank just a couple of steps AWAY from my AoE Ground heal that's about to detonate, you bet I'm going to rescue them into that heal.
The only times I've seen healers misuse rescue is when you piss them off or intentionally troll them. Don't piss off your healers. They are not healbots who will adjust to your every whim - they're players.
If they take away RDM's backflips since they backflip over the stage, or BLM's Leylines/between the lines, Aetherial Manipulation to encourage BLM to start dodging mechanics and any other job with a disposition, I'll be fine if they took away healer's rescue.
Sounds like a terrible idea? That's because it is. Rescue can be very useful when used correctly, but so can RDM's backflips to dodge mechanics. However, just because they can cause deaths, doesn't mean their usage should be taken away. The same thing applies here. I've seen way more good on rescue than bad exactly because of how many people who just refuse to do mechanics or stand in AoE Heals.
I've seen Re-screw exactly twice, both of them yesterday. Queued into Trial Roulette on my Warrior, it was Ifrit, soon as I got into my Berserk groove I'm suddenly sliding across the arena towards the White Mage. And then the Gunbreaker gets yoink'd to the other healer, carrying fire-doggo across the arena and cleaving like half the party.
I'm almost willing to attribute both of those to just fat-fingering since both of the healers were very confused when called on it. But it's also entirely possible they were just pranksters in cahoots.
I have yet to encounter this being used as a troll tactic; and while I won't deny that this can happen, I think the people who use this as a basis to call for a removal of the ability are grossly overblowing any real "issue." I see Provoke being used as a 'trolling' tactic to mess with boss positioning who happen to have cleaves. Can we change/remove that too? /sarcasm.
I imagine that you can deal with healers that you're positive are doing this out of spite the same way as any healer who refuses to actually heal anybody or any player who makes it their goal to be an active hindrance: Vote kick.
Rescue in itself is a good ability, but ideally I'd rather it be given a faster reaction similar to BLM's Ethereal Manipulation, if that's even possible. Because of latency and server ticks, I only find myself using Rescue when there's enough time for me to rationalize 'yeah, they're not gonna move' - Amon being the prime example - but for faster scenarios like say, E4, chances are I'd end up dragging people into the aoe instead.
No.
Rescue is a very useful tool when used correctly and this isn't discounted by the fact that some people use it to troll by temporarily moving you slightly.
If they do it multiple times and it results in you dying, and you know for certain they weren't trying to help, feel free to report for harassment.
And in a not-so-pertinent-but-related tangent, a member of my FC recently passed away, he was the joker of the group and would regularly rescue us in our FC-only Trials runs, it was his thing. We just commemorated him in game by, among other things, doing an all-healer min ilvl dungeon run and Rescuing each other into certain death.
So outside of PUG runs where people are expected to play responsibly, it's actually quite a lot of fun to troll each other with it.
The amount of times I've rescued a bard standing in Narnia into my soil/asylum/star and I've had them immediatly run back to Narnia tells me rescue should have a shorter cooldown, maybe it should add a "leash" debuff to the target dragged in as well forcing them to follow you until you release it so the brainless wonders can actually get healed or do mechanics properly for a change Only some of that was /s
A successful Rescue feels amazing. I wouldn't want to lose the validation I get from timing it right. They already took so much. Please let me have nice things!
Yeah no. Rescue is great. I've been farming Orbonne for Mog Tomes and I can't tell you how many times I've had to use it to drag people into the 3 person platforms or position them manually because they aren't moving with the growing dome marker during the Thunder God. Can it be troll-ish? Yeah, sure. I had a pair the other day, also in Orbonne, where the healer was trolling their own friend the whole time. Which I suppose is a lesser evil than trolling a stranger but it kept resulting in the healer and their friend dying and leftt me solo healing and trying to get them back up. So I left them dead and the DPS apparently agreed because so did our Redmages. I did also have a Lallafel rage at me for rescuing them from an AoE. 'I HAVE BEEN HERE MANY A TIME SO PLEASE DO NOT RESCUE ME.' They were dead 30 seconds later. Long story short, it should stay and I'm actually starting to agree with the shorter cooldown or charge system suggestions made in jest.
