I wouldn't be surprised at all if the toilet is one of the items that actually gets implemented frankly. Just taking a look at sites like housingsnap and the housing side of FF14 twitter shows that there's a demand for item combinations that can 'fake' the look of a toilet. So I can see SE throwing a bone to the housing nerds given how often those posts tend to be liked and how many builds generally have a bathroom addition.

Do we even need real working plumbing in this setting? Water can literally appear by magic from water aspected crystals.

The only reference to.... personal ablutions in the game is several FATEs (Downwind in Southern Thanalan, and Unbearable in the Fringes), both of which mention most Eorzeans just use privies which are basically just a bench over a hole in the ground. Most Eorzeans are not even connected to running water let alone sewage, so a flush toilet is just too advanced for the setting, to say nothing of the trope I mentioned earlier.

They may not be under any obligation but I wouldn't be surprised to see the toilet. I mean, we have bathroom floor tiles with drains, we have shower stands, we have bathtubs with a handheld spray nozzle (though you can't in game pick it up, take al ook at the carbuncle bathtub.) We have proper sinks now for washing. A toilet added on to what we already have in housing isn't really a big change, and one could always say that perhaps plumbing isn't widely available but does exist in the housing districts for adventurers etc.

Don't water crystals act a substitute? Much like how you can grill a hotdog with fire crystals instead of a fire, you shouldn't actually need to connect to running water in this universe.

The thing with those references is that they're both in "low-tech" regions - that's the situation for the refugees in Little Ala Mhigo, who are basically living in a cave. We can't assume it's the same everywhere else.

Also, the residential districts have canonically just been built - so if anywhere in Eorzea has newfangled innovations like sewerage and indoor plumbing, it's going to be there.
