Their code for FF14 is notoriously difficult to work with. You also have to understand that the Black Desert Engine was made specifically to handle intense graphics and many characters on screen at once. Crystal Tools however, the engine FFXIV is using, from what I can gather took a more Jack of All Trades route in terms of what it's processing power could be focused upon. Also the latter was specifically designed with the 360, PS3, PC, and the Wii - a.k.a. last generation consoles that are quickly approaching two generations past at the rate things are going. They'd have to do a lot to make the game look close to BDO's levels with the limitations that Crystal Tools places upon them, especially since from what I can gather it doesn't have the ability to be updated to an insane degree like the near three decade spanning Gamebryo. It's not like they can just throw their hands up and go 'HEY LET'S SWITCH TO LUMINOUS STUDIO (FFXV's engine)' and then everything will be right as rain either.
