I think with materias the effect of craptastic substats is lessened compared to before. Generally wd upgrade is always an upgrade though.

I'll bet my left sock that they do know what is optimal and what is not, but it's all on purpose. Otherwise we'd only have identical gear with only numbers increasing by ten or whatever on every tier, and I'd say that would be even worse.

So much in this expansion just seems like it was strung together in the last minute, it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. Hearing that we have the potential to hit the 90th percentile without stacking SPS to the heavens though, makes me feel a little less iffy about upgrades that don't have our "ideal" primary stats.

Looking at the gear sets as a whole, in a vaccum, it looks like they do know what they are doing (this patch).
Looking at drg from a gear up stand point looks like they know what they are doing also.
In v1-2s (what you are expected to clear with a susano wep) possible gear stats favor lowering over all skill speed. The LA weapon when purchased would stabalize skill speed lost and bring it on par with your pre gear up potential values. Which would keep your rotation relatively the same pace.

If you are completely unlucky like me and get unfavorable stat drop only gear upgrades, then yes the skill speed is a disgusting mess of a too fast rotation. (I may very well beat a mnk with gl3 up in gcd recast atm)
