Has anyone noticed?

well since colors no longer effect stats it would be nice to be able to have different types of gear like the other armor types.

From what I remember they said it'll eventually come -- the foundation of the game only allowed and were designed for basically what exists at present time, they're slowly changing this to allow for what you basically want.

I figure they had to start somewhere, so they started with mage gear.
