EQII does something a bit like this. You get credits toward the cash shop if you stay subbed and log in to collect the monthly allowance. What's nice is that you can choose what you want. They do have a Veteran Reward system as well, or they did, but sometimes the rewards were rather underwhelming.
Let's be honest. The rewards exist primarily to incentivize a continual subscription. When they reach 4+ years before you'll see them, any incentive has long since eroded. Personally, I prefer the change, especially if glamour options return. It allows everyone a chance at a reasonable time and better incentivizes people stay active. Keep in mind, 90 days was only the first campaign. It could very well change once this one ends.
The whole veterans thing doesn't make sense to me in a P2P only game. I am not going to sub X number of years just because of some outside bonus. I'd prefer the awesome stuff to be unlocked in gameplay. If giving incentives becomes the big reason someone subs, then this game should go hybrid payment model. That is basically what it turns into with coupons or bonuses, similar to ESO crowns.
Only here, currently you have to pay to be able to play at all for the most part.
ARR free to play 1-50 for all time.
Buy HW to be able to play 51-60.
Buy SB to be able to play 61-70.
Buy next expansion to be able to play 71-80.
It sounds like I want XIV to go Buy to Play. That is not the case. I like the current model too and it seems to have allowed content to come fast. Switching over might mess up content creation.
I am just saying this concept of coupons or veteran rewards just for subbing makes it feel more like a Buy to Play game. I have subbed so far for the actual game not bonuses. If SE can make extra money off the mogstation which I have never bought anything off of great. Let's not teeter that line unless a change in payment model is coming though.
I like most things being earned through the game and don't want to feel confusion on what I can or can't access.
I see how making cash shop items available as a veteran reward is unlikelyvto happen. People before mein this thread have already made solid arguments against that. But I can see how replacing the veteran rewards for a form of currency is a practical thing.
So heres an obvious solution:
Replace veteran rewards with a currency acquired over subscription time that allows a player to buy items from a selection of the existing veteran rewards. With the value of the items differing based on the amount of subscription days needed.
an example: a player really wants the Cloud outfit because FF7 was one of his favorite FF's. He can save up veteran points to obtain it sooner than he normally could by not spending his points on the earlier rewards because he might not care about minions and other outfits. This would ensure that the Squall outfit still remains a highly exclusive prize that demands recognition from other players. (Wich is what supporters of the current system seem to want, me included)
Since fantasia is also on the list of veteran rewards. There could even be a possibility that a player buys no veteran prizes at all, and saves them to buy multiple fantasia over the course his time played. This contradicts with my earlier statement of cashshop items likely not becoming free though. But may be worth considering for SE if they take peoples complaints of the cashshop into consideration.
