I wouldn't mind more meat to the MSQ that comes with every patch. Not filler like the ARR was with the errand-boy quests in abundance.
Gating, linear play, however you want to term it, is almost required to give a sense of direction and flow to the story. IE: Onward to Azys Lla, an Allagan marvel that has been untouched for millenia! Oh wait, the player has already ventured there. Talk about no build up; the experience is ruined.
In another thread, yours actually, there had been some points as to why it shouldn't be open-world/sandbox.
That being said, SE won't ever give up on their lore. It's what makes the story function in the first place.
