I've been using that guide for my NIN. Seems to work pretty well for me.

If you can complete the SSS A8S Dummy at i225 then you know your class decently well.
If you want to do it a legit way, you can try SSS, then post your results (hp remaining or remaining time) to http://ffxiv.2digitalgames.de/
Non legit way is more convenient, and you can measure yourself (and others, but let's not start about this) in real encounters, but never talk about it. People who ask "what is my parse?" are trolls that will report you the moment you try to help them.
All I can say is:
-Practice, Practice, Practice I can't say this enough about DPS or people who seriously want to improve i'm constantly trying to find ways to squeeze in more DPS as a smn in every encounter I do.
-Look up guides, rotations/priorities (and learn the difference)
-Do stone sea and sky
-Learn fights inside and out if you're a blm or melee know when to go ahead and use positionals or don't move at all, if you're a smn learn to manage your stacks effectively
-Know what you can get away with, if you have a solid healer who'll let you take risks in raid content let em know and synergize
