this is not accurate, i think what it comes down to, is that it depends on the gear. For example, ifrit gear is better than something with 2-3 good materia on it, the siphaphi set is better than something with 1-2 average materia on it. Some other gear is like better than 1 easy materia'd gear or just equivalent. Simple put, i think the non crafted gear is not like universally better or worse, except a 3+ materiad HQ gear will be number one, but honestly its a lot harder to get than anything else. I have seen more ifrit gear than i have seen top teir materia HQ 3x materia gear. This will likely only continue to be the case, as more people learn the strat, and power up their gears, ifrit will become defeated more and more often. the same with dungeon drop gear, and once people get it to certain level, they will sell ifrit drops just like they have always done, and it will cost money, and less time than even a materiad gear to obtain.
Its simply not as easy to obtain that.
Dungeons dont have to take a backseat. If S.E. wanted to, they could make dungeons relevant by:
-Having dungeons drop good materia
-Having dungeon drops converible into good materia
-Having dungeons drop crafting mats which crafters can use to make good gear (see Dodore doublet etc)
Saying "oh such is life" is a bit dismissive, because it's pretty obvious how they can manage to keep dungeons, materia, and crafting all equally important at endgame.
I dont like the fact that Dungeon will drop key mats for a recipe that be able to add materia, it just overprice the item and Dodore is a good example, 2kk for skin , 1,2kk for leather (dont ask me why), 5kk for the piece <---- for a piece with 6 crafmanship higher than Lominsan Double and GL with add the vit materia on it with higher than 3rd w/o scare of broke it
ninja edit: sure it look good, a thing you can have but really....6 crafmanship higher....
i do agree, that it makes most dungeon gear ehhh, at the very least let it become materia, I mean i see how that can lead to monopolization, IE people never letting anyone else get the drops cause they are always materializing them, but ehhhh.
I do think they may have some plan for dungeon gear, because it does get spirit bond, it may turn out that later they will add some process by which you can get certain materia from them, or some other use for spirit bond. the only problem is the monopolization issue, but really thats less of an issue with instanced content, and currently with the direct drop policy, people cant really force you to give up your drop for because they materialized 3 ifrit swords already
Personally I think making dungeon loot useless like this is a bad idea.
The whole purpose of completing dungeons is to get the loot to better your class/stats, by making crafted gear superior you take that away and the only reason left to do dungeon content is to get the kill achievement, granted that's is a fair reason to do a dungeon but you only need to do it once and its done.
SE will never keep subscriptions high if they don't provide repeatable content and more importantly a good reason to continue doing it.
People first assume that in WoW you just go in a dungeon and get loot, but to get the good stuff you have to collect the tokens and buy it from an NPC, which can take weeks and months to get.
Some of the good stuff is craftable but only like 2 pieces per class and the best of the best comes from the hard raid content.
This game will never hold subscriptions if they expect the casual gamer to become hardcore crafters.
Some of the dungeon gear will offer stats that you can't normally get that effect from materia from. For example, Hells Fist Materia is not meldable on leg gear, but the Claret Breeches found in the Darkhold will offer Attack Magic Potency +
Crafted + Materia gear may have better overall stats but there will always be a piece of armor or a weapon that will have a stat that is not possible to add that same effect through materia craft.
One thing to remember is that the Darkhold and its associated gear came in 1.18, whereas a lot of system changes occured in 1.19 so it's likely that they'll update the gear from there eventually so that it reflects their current attitudes, and I'd expect the gear in future raid instances (2 coming in 1.20 or 1.21 i think?) to be somewhat more in line with materia gear, even if it's not quite as powerful.
The current system is out of whack though, dungeon content needs to have good rewards or no one will do it. What's the point of entering a new dungeon and working really hard to do it (Darkhold was a really tough dungeon when it first came in remember, took a good while to finish) only to find that all your spoils are utterly redundant aside from a few situational pieces for slots materia doesn't fit?
I wouldn't expect the current situation to be a permenant one.
yawn this argument has raised its ugly head agian i see. ok first off ifrit weapons are better than materia melded weapons (not for casters but i think that is an oversight) ifrit is only the first primal and only drops weapons. it has been said other primals will drop armour. so when this happens there will be unique gear that is better than materia. just have a bit of patience. the materia system is new, and that kinda why its the best. who know what new gear in new dungeons will be like. my guess is coz it will be new it will be the best, but even it its not u still have primal armour to look forward too
