Crit is the highest stat weight of all the jobs that have been done. Safe to say that crit will be best on DRK too.
Actually there is using a lower grade materia increases the chance of a succesfull meld, though its not a lot I think it was 2.5% difference for each tier.
Though i would have to check to be certain, a hq item has a slightly higher chance to succesfully meld.
Beyond that there is no way to increase the chance of a succesfull meld beyond black arts or divination. :P
As i've beaten the odds on occasion trying to overmeld my crafting gear with 15 fails at 13% and 30 at 15% for one succesfull meld, its something around those lines.
You get a bonus to overmelding if the gear is HQ vs NQ. I haven't tried overmelding the new token gear, but I'd imagine your chances will be the NQ gear rates, which are substantially lower. I guess that's one advantage the crafted gear still has over the token gear, though hardly worth the lower ilvl except as a stepping stone now that crafted do not get bonus secondaries over other gear.
Apart from that, no, there's no way to improve overmelding chances.
Its worth mentioning that if you need to keep Grit on for an extended period (and thus not have Blood Weapon), you need around 680-690 Skill Speed to ensure Scourge isn't falling off the boss. Anything more than that and you start looking at the inability to double-weave things which is bad, as well as diminishing returns on BW.
After that, all Crit, and Det in whatever is Crit capped. Feel free to use Parry gear during progression, but don't meld Parry.
