I don't care about this fluff. I just want to finally be able to be an actor in the game rather than a spectator.

It probably will be like that lol. SE has a nice habit of placing games "X years since massive calamity"
Although I think if the world is being rebuilt then 2.0 would be the perfect opportunity to add quests where crafters can help rebuild things =D. I personally hope they don't time lapse through it because I really enjoyed WotG because of the whole sense of danger accompanied with the Crystal War. I think it would be fun that if the cities are partially destroyed and from the catastrophe that low level players are advised to stay in doors at night because wolves and ghosts wander into the streets. Would really add a lot of dynamic to the game and make everything feel less "safe"
I'm not sure if they have a choice on this matter; the apocalypse can't exactly happen off-screen - and yet they can't let us run pants-sh!ttingly free as the world comes crashing down. Logic says the servers will go down, games will merge, and we'll load up into a new epic cutscene followed by the rail-guided "first quest" again.
That's going to be one very long maintenance session. I can see the game being down for days.
It's too hard to tell. It all depends on how they approach it, if everything goes well without a hitch, how many people are working on it. 10 years ago I could see it taking days. I really have no idea what is involved though so just a guess, but days seems a bit much.
