<sigh>...that wasn't his point. He even pretty much said so. He was merely showing examples of other systems so that any Devs who read this might have something to compare to. I don't believe Pride's asking for a direct rip-off, quite the contrary...

SE needs to find something that sticks because the df tome race is wearing thin on more and more people each patch.

I'm really excited about the materia changes coming in 3.2 and I hope we get an amazing system. I am still bummed that craters are needed to affix materia, and while I leveled my crafts to do so, it would be cool that crafters would be needed for advanced materia melding, but if there is a slot, perhaps anyone could attach the materia that way. Seems that more people will want to take advantage of that with the changes they have already talked about.

I'm hopeful for 3.2. :)

Even if it is only me that doesn't like competition, that's enough to make this statement wrong.

PvP games are renown for their horrible community and that's primarily because of their natural competition. Competition means that for every winner, there's at least one loser. No amount of "gitgut", "learning" or whatever can change this fundamental fact of competition. That alone is enough reason to shy away from it. And no, this does in no way funnel "community". In fact, it quickly turns your allies into enemies. Just look at how much people flame their own team in MOBAs. Community? Really? It's the exact opposite.

I, for one, purposely picked a PvE game this time around to avoid the cesspool that a widespread competitive mindset creates, thank you.

Yet people have turned their nose up at every alternative offered so far... diadem, raiding, relic... and in 3.2 people will bellyache about crafted gear I'm sure.

I regret to inform you that, while it isn't just you, those who don't like competition are in the minority. To be clear, Pride wasn't talking about "open-world" PvP, either. I doubt he wants FFXIV to turn into Conan (bleagh). But competition, true competition, does generally add a sense of community. Team building adds to camaraderie, gives us a goal to work towards together, for each other. Right now rewards are truly just for one self. I too prefer a system where I don't have to watch my back just to get a few mats...but Pride is asking for more PvP *content*, not to make the whole thing PvP.

Diadem has its own fixable problems, raiding savage is overtuned and out of reach for many players, and relic still involves the df, a major portion of its grind is from tomes found in df runs. when the problem is rerunning content until you are sick, then running it some more, That is hardly an alternative.

I'm also sorry to inform you that it isn't PvP that causes people to be jerks...they simply exist. I bump into them all the time, even in FFXIV, all the time. Competition isn't the source of grumpy people, and adding more competition will not make them worse. They just simply are, and the best we can do is ignore them.

That's life, kid. If you can't handle it...you might be in trouble. Btw, if anyone has convinced you of this intentionally, they are doing you harm, not looking out for you. Competition is healthy, it makes us aware of our potential, and where we need to improve to become better. Sometimes even losing can be a good thing.
