Look at how many copies RIFT sold as well. If they didn't advertise they wouldn't have sold nearly as many, the game was just as fail as FFXIV at launch.

Rift was the perfect launch... it is just the game is just a horrible copy of WoW.
Advertising and the beta (which was not really a beta, where every single person who was registered ont he forums) was the perfect was to get members. That game got in trouble when people figured out Level 1 was more or less the same as level 50.
yeah not like this whole next year of taking our money can't pay for it lol. they don't advertise cause they think there wonder bread they don't have to anymore and probably why they think they can just launch early and empty or start charging when it's obviously not ready either.
I agree, Rift had a very successful launch. My problem is that the feeling I had at launch did not last me through the levels. But that's neither here nor there. Rift's Marketing Campaign is probably the main reason they had so many followers in the first place. Hell, it's the reason I even looked into it in the first place. Granted, it was a sort of "low blow" to Blizzard, but they took brand recognition and used it to help strengthen the knowledge of their product.
"A game so good, even the beta testers had to pay for it!"
oo oo and for the Rift version of a slogan...
"We're not in beta anymore!"
