I think it had something to do with the completely missed shield for BLM in BCoB.

I've always thought it was silly that CNJ and THM had the option for one- and two-handed weapons. Since that's the case for them, it would have made sense to me to have given one- and two-handed weapons. Gladiators, for example, could have been given 1h swords + shields and 2h-swords, which would in turn have opened up the avenue for Paladin as a tank and Dark Knight as a DPS. MRD could have been given Greataxes for Warrior and two 1h axes for a Viking DPS class.
A little bit of creativity would have enabled this to work for all classes and made the branching easier, if that's what SE still wanted to do.
Yep, that FCoB Turn 12 Dreadwyrm Shield drop took me awhile to get. Hated how it was part of the two items you could get weekly, should have been a possible third slot. Oh well, once the weekly lock out was abolished I finally got one.
Of course with Ravana EX I had to buy the shield since well it never dropped in conjunction with anything, but the 7 tokens for sword + 3 shield price is a fair trade off. It would likely be the same with WHM/BLM if they did it again. With the amount of jobs now the token system does ease the pain a little bit.
I would rather have them take the one handed weapons and use it on other jobs for examples just give wands to a magic tank like geomacer or illusionist. And give sceptors to mystic knighs kinda like(dragons dogma) knights with the staff and shield compo.
They should have real offhands. Like fans and stuff, never understood why this game can't comprehend putting anything in your offhand but a shield.
What is wrong with with having them be the only classes with different weapon options? Why does every class have to be the same or fair? Why not have more diversity instead of trying to make sure every class is the same.
Love this game, but this to me is the biggest problem with the current class/job system.
