43 NPCs. Counting Tataru twice would be 44.

It doesn't update on its own but if you're stuck wondering which ones you've already beaten for the 41 achievement then you'll probably be making the rounds to them all anyway. It's easy enough just to check the list (takes all of a second) when you've gone around to them all.

tataru doesnt count for the achievment anyway...

I didn't know Tataru doesn't count for the achievement. Sorry. D: I had to actually check which npc I hadn't beaten yet, since to my surprise Noel gave me the 41 npc achievement. It was Yellow Moon in Weaver's guild that I had missed! :D
