...I just can't justify paying a subscription to the game. Maybe after RADICAL changes, but even then, I can imagine a lot of the community leaving when they reintroduce subs.

You can bet on it. I myself am one of those that are very unlikely to stay once subscription fee start being charged...because i don't like the current game at all. I'm playing still with the last breath of my faith because i'm a FF fan...but it long ime ago stopped pleasing me...right now the correct word for how i feel would be more like "enduring" the game...and i'm sure many might be feeling the same way.
