Link the wards together, add a /shout channel that can be heard from all towns. Give us a reason to stay in our "home" nations. I chose Gridania for a reason, but it just doesn't make sense to stay there when all the action is in Ul'dah.

I don't agree about shouts...would be hell having all shouts seens everywhere...even if restricted to show at cities only.
I agree about MW tho...i've been asking this for a while already...making MW like FFXI's chocobo circuit, where you can enter by any city but regardless of the exit you take you will exit where you entered from...and then merge all wards in a fair-like map...this way, regardless if you entered Upper tailor ward, row or den you would end in the same place. Would be great for a healthier economy.
Friend.... i see the next issues on your request....
1.- While is true Wards at Ul'Dah are the most congested cause most (for not say everyone) set their retainers there while others are empty.... imagine what could it become of it if they conect all wards!
2.- SE has made clear their intention to make people to move to other city states and not remain stuck on Ul?Dah only... and actually the previous point (#1) is a reason for this.
3.- Im sure not everyone loves Ul'Dah as their home .... as much only cause everyone gathers there so is easier to shout/get repairs/sell stuff
I think the key for this is not unify wards or change whole system into an Ah like at XI, but more really something like make retainers more useful, lets say like make them go other nations do our shoppings at certain times or smething alike.... like you go contact your retainer in Ul'Dah and you have other things to do than go check Limsa Lominsa wards... well sent your retainer check out for certain items you list to him.... watch that like a more an advanced "Seek item" function they already have.
Haha, wooo, was waiting for this, its been about a week or so.
But, to add something useful to the thread. I believe SE does not intend to leave the wards as is. I am sure they have something planned, either adding an AH or enhancing the wards enough to not need one.
I am one with the opinion they should not be linked.
Looks they are indeed adding shout channels at some point (according to a thread in the UI section).
Not sure what you guys are talking about the wards being overcrowded if they were linked. At least on my server, if you go to the wards in LL or Gridania you'll see maybe 2 or 3 retainers in each area of the wards. They would be equally crowded as Ul'dah is, but accessible everywhere.
Ya...with the confirmation of FFXIV being receiving microtransation system (cash shop) its possible to be iike this...i've seen MMOs where you buy items that give you the right to do 1 universal shout (appears in every area of the game) and seems like what they want...as Yoichi Wada own words: “We soon learnt that there are a lot of people who want that kind of model, so we would like to introduce more pay-as-you-use items into the game." So its possible to be like you buying an item with a few charges...once charges are gone its useless and you will need to buy a new one.

Does this mean SE are considering keeping FFXIV free to play and just make money through a cash shop?Ya...with the confirmation of FFXIV being receiving microtransation system (cash shop) its possible to be iike this...i've seen MMOs where you buy items that give you the right to do 1 universal shout (appears in every area of the game) and seems like what they want...as Yoichi Wada own words: “We soon learnt that there are a lot of people who want that kind of model, so we would like to introduce more pay-as-you-use items into the game." You can bet on it. I myself am one of those that are very unlikely to stay once subscription fee start being charged...because i don't like the current game at all. I'm playing still with the last breath of my faith because i'm a FF fan...but it long ime ago stopped pleasing me...right now the correct word for how i feel would be more like "enduring" the game...and i'm sure many might be feeling the same way.
