True enough with the WHM and BLM staves. But in the trailers DRK has been shown with a full body size "katana" equipped. Very much like what Auron has.

Just quickly glanced ovdr this but my take on your idea is that you'd still have a dd with 2-3 different combos of skills with a couple off gcd abilities. The gimmick for the samurai job would be that using those skills in specific combos would produce skillchains kinda how mudra make ninjutsu. Timing the skillchain with say b4b or raging strikes could make nice burst.
The DRK sword would be a Nodachi which is bigger than a Tachi (Dai Katana).
A SAM can use a traditional Katana, but a Tachi is possible too.
Yoshimitsu are called daggers, but they're clearly Wakizashi.
Also, PLD already has Zantetsuken. I don't think they care that much about categories like this.
Katana over daikatana, IMO. SAM needs to rock it Vergil from DMC-style, with all the swag that goes with that. I'd love something like the iaijutsu katana attacks in PSO2 + FFT's Draw Out system.
It's not much of a source, but if you wantch the heavensward benchmark, there's a DRK equipped with a Katana looking sword.

I think Samurai could be 1 or 2 possible jobs branching from the same class, like Arcanist does SCH and SMN.
Fencer into Samurai or Swordmaster.. idk. I like the idea of a offhand weapon, PLD is the only class with one atm really (considering relic, blm/whm are 2hand).
DPS job or tank job. Depending on which the offhand works as a shield or like FFXI's Grips (stat padding).
I'd like to see samurai as a TP master. High TP usage (like BLM high), TP based utility skills that supports TP users (not just giving them TP) and manual TP management (not just use em and push button to gain TP).
SAM will be a magic-based DPS, clearly.
Okay, lets try a different approach. A NIN and PLD do not, in any way, wield the daggers the same at all. Right down to the grip. To my knowledge Auron is the only SAM to consistently use oversized Katana's, and he wields them like a powerful, heavy sword.
So, while they could do the switch, a giant slab of metal is going to be much harder to animate differently from how DRK uses it, and how WAR already swings its weapon. However, give them a normal Katana and as someone said, they can make SAM go Iai-jutsu style, they can make them look extremely technical, they can make them dual wield with a wakazashi or even the sheath.
So that in addition to DRK currently having the giant style katana, makes me believe that SAM won't be getting it.
I'd like to see it as a melee dps/support class as we don't really have one of those. It could take Iaido from FFT and work it into the game. Perhaps different katanas for different effects, or Iaidos could have dual purposes-- ie, using it debuffs an enemy while at the same time buffing the party.
