Jokes aside:

I only think some players would just go for Machinist just because it is a Gun Job (the whole Guns are cool issue, belief, and stuff). It is possible that the same thing may happen to Machinist like what happened to bard with how a good amount of people may not be utilizing Machinist's full potential.

Most people don't use most of the classes to their full potential. :P

Not to mention they've been teasing a Gun class since 1.0.

The goggles on Monk's soldiery helmet (and I believe Bard's too) function with /visor in this fashion, so it's not outside the realm of possibilities.

It's little solace, but the i100 eyepatch and i80 eyepatch cover different eyes and look alike.

and ya at most times players won't use certain Jobs to their full potential either out of laziness, not suited for that certain gameplay style, or etc.
