I can play Battlefield 4 multiplayer just fine during this maintenance. Yet i can not log into ff14. So its se decision to do it this way. If it was Sony decision then no game would work. Bad decision from se to need psn to log into the game.

So MS "refusing" ff14 is now an antitrust issue we need authorities to look at? Believe it or not but it is still legal for console manufacturers to work out deals with publishers (or not).
As for the larger picture there are three console systems. More would do little to increase competition and cause the games to become even more fractured between systems and increasing cost on developers/publishers....which would obviously be passed on to us as consumers.
TLDR....service is down a few hours, but we dont need Congress to investigate.
TC, you don't need PSN+ to play XIV. You only need regular PSN, which is free. Also, M$ has since become greedy, they were wanting to also make people have their Gold service to play XIV and that was one of the issues along with unique servers.
I should have made it more clear. PSN regular to use is free, it's the PS+ that people pay for to get access to free monthly games and other things. My point was that even without paying the monthly, and just using the standard PSN "Silver" account we'll call it, you can still be locked out of XIV because PSN is for some reason still connected to the game.
Sony's servers aren't used to run XIV, the game is controlled and operated by Square Enix, they have their own servers for it, but if PSN goes down, I still need it to run XIV. Why is this?
I could see it in the future when they would want us to pay for the PS+, just so they're still making money off of people already paying for another 2 things just to play XIV, of which the fee monthly is going to be likely 100$ or over altogether, currency exchanges not withstanding since that differs based on region. Having PSN connected to it though doesn't make any sense. PSN doesn't go down when SE does maintenance, so why does XIV go down for Playstation users when PSN has maintenance? They should be separate from each other.
Sony uses psn for online features. Microsoft uses Xbox live for online features. If this chafes your butt play on PC.
Your SE account is connected to your psn account. I think when you registered for your SE game on the playstation it "linked" your account to your PSN account. No working PSN, no way to connect to that linked account.
