I find the lack of "role-playing" disturbing.

Does mother know thou weareth her drapes?

I've seen role-playing FCs and linkshells on Coeurl, but don't know how active they are.

Personally, when I roleplay it's generally private, and there's no way for anyone else to recognize that I'm roleplaying. Getting together with multiple people who roleplay sounds like it would be fun, but I've never tried it (and wouldn't know how to organize it).

In other games, I've seen something that the people involved referred to as "roleplaying" but was really more about storytelling. (It's not really in-character to keep describing everything your character is thinking, feeling, and doing, but some people can make good stories out of it.) I haven't seen that at least on the public channels here, but most chat seems to be on FC/LS chat anyway, so it's likely taking place but out of sight of the rest of us.

I can't imagine going a day without seeing RPs. Seriously. Most of ours seem to center around the 3 main cities, especially Ul'dah, but you will still run across them every so often in the open world.

I had no idea this was a server specific thing, but maybe so..

Balmung is the place you wanna be for role play. the other day i was fishing minding my onw buisness when up came 4 role players. they spent like 45 minutes roleplaying .

also a couple of months ago i experienced a hyur woman whoe ate some shrooms and was talking to her dead mother.. i took the oportunity to use my deer hat and swimsuit and started roleplaying as her concience, she went along with it!.... this has been the only time a roleplayer improvised and took me into account , it was awesome!. the rest just ignores me. :(

Gilgamesh is, Unfortunately, more 'clique-based' and 'event-based' Roleplay, when I was on that server 4 months ago. You would be hard-pressed to find open-RP, so much as you'd find people who RP with their FC and behind-closed-doors.

Balmung has been great, though, but tends to be more 'open-Tavern RP.' I don't find many people on the world map RP'ing openly, unfortunately, but I imagine if I tried to initiate with someone who has an RP-tag, I'd have an easy time of it.

since the beginings of time (1.0 beta) besaid, now balmung. was named unofficial RP server by the FF community. and is has been so ever since :D

I was under the impression there were specific servers for people of the RP persuasion

On a normal server? Never seen it.. Really don't want to. In my 15-16 years of playing MMOs I had 1 roleplayer approach me ever. On EQ outside of Riverwale in the Misty Thicket. He asked me my name. At which point I looked at my screen like he was a crazy person and asked if he could read.

Since RPers on Balmung do their best to live in harmony with the non-RPers, they tend to keep to themselves once they get a certain distance from an Adventurer's Guild.
