Teleporting

I'm hoping they'll eventually introduce something like the Nexus Cape from XI... teleport to party leader's location (or nearest home point crystal or zone line)

As for the clues about the timeline... if I remember right, several of the trailers covered it. Recall a voice over stating "5 years have come and gone...", you watch scenes from around the realm as narration talks about how the realm has changed, "...an adventurer arrives in Eorzea...", and then you see the party teleport in. At the very least, it strongly hints at what happened to them. They've been edited in the current release of the game, but I think the progression was retained in one of the videos that runs when it goes into attract mode if you sit idle long enough.

Well even that hourglass symbol is incredibly hard to notice - and to be honest, someone like myself would simply assume that the spell just looks like that and was never intended to display any symbolism at all.

What frustrates me to no end, is that there seem to be almost no information or background further back than the ''calamity''. It is like the world was created during the calamity. And there are no background or information on the gods either - only that they are there and there function.

I have thoroughly read all main quest and side quest information. So unless it is not contained within those, then i have not read it.

Not thoroughly enough, then. A lot of sidequests and dungeon flavor text tell us about the past civilizations of the Allagans, Sil'dihns, Belah'dians, and Gelmorrans. The Monk questline gives you an npc that teaches you a history of war in Eorzea. Various NPCs will tell you bits and pieces of things about the Twelve, and you can even find their symbols scattered around the world if you look.

The event where Bahamut comes down and reeks havoc was the final cutscene of 1.0 when the servers were shut down. The events of 2.0 take place directly after, the heroes of 1.0 forgotten - only known now as the Heroes of Light.

guessing the dialogues/descriptions weren't read very closely, nor were the videos/CS paid much attention. A lot of information is revealed through opening cinematics, character creation, main story, side stories, and job specific quests. A ton of it is recapped also on partner sites, Youtube, etc. Maybe we need more goblin NPC's for the cinematic recalls like we had in XI? Those guys were EVERYWHERE in XI.

I have no interest in the Monk class sadly. I really hate being smacked aside the face all day. My character is WHM/SMN and am currently leveling an ARC mostly to gain the extra abilities for the SMN. Aside from those classes, i have little interest in the others.

The most recent quest i completed (mostly because i must have missed it on my first run through) was the ''Gentleman'' quest that starts in one of the main cities and tells of someone trying to prevent the calamity from happening. It is quite vague and short.

No, i think the biggest problem is that if you were to convert all written text from dialogue into book form, it would probably be a bigger volume than LOTR full book. Trouble is, it isnt all the same story as that book is. More like 1000 different unrelated segments of history from the past 5 years. Very little prior to the calamity.

Gotta love Google and Youtube.... just saying, there's plenty of info out there if you really want to know. Everybody and their brother has a wiki or blog up it seems, not to mention tons of videos on the youtube channels. Heck.. even SE has videos out there that you can link to from within the Lodestone (What is Final Fantasy XIV/Media, then go to the Trailers section).
