@Renik open world content in the game you have pointed are normal, the technic at this time didn't allows to support an heavy structure made of many instance.
now is possible, it give more chance for everybody to have acces to the same content.

Most of that open world content in the above games consisted of NMs and HNMs that were Hell to camp, had atrocious respawns, and ludicrous drop rates. All of which are required in some form or another to prevent the entire server from having the drops in under a week. All the best content in those games was instanced too with the exception of Sky and did you do Sky in the heyday? OMFG Worse than the ground NMs. Sky lasted as long as it did because you had to win the lottery twice to get anything (win claim over the bots then actually luck out and get your drop). You add something like this to FFXIV and it would be unplayable for weeks with the glut of people trying to do it.
OP, you are still not seeing the whole picture of the game....
Yes, we all know this game is not perfect, but which game is?
Highest party level setting is 200. (why not 999, if it's just script)
We can't access to highest states in grand company yet.
Tones of area un-open yet.
Not mention we are only at the base of crystal tower.
Not all primals implanted yet.
In other words, the game isn't complete yet.
This type of thread will just keep coming back. (Shurg)
And your vertical progression? If it's level based games, it's gonna be vertical progression.
You do realize you are playing MMORPG and not racing game or mario brothers, right?
Lot of ppl saying this is an MMO, but a MMO is no place for scrypted battles, instances and vertical gear progression, this game, is not an MMO is a big lobby server with a lot "arcade mode" games, an MMO is supposed to be a living world where the players can interact, fighting, crafting or housing, ADVENTURING, that's a real MMO, the imagen of the MMOs this new generation of gamers have is wrong, MMOs are about freedom and adventuring.
I see it now, or you're too blind by the light of the title or i'm wrong for being the only one expecting excitement when fighting, freedom and adventures from a MMO.
Mark my words, since the alpha of the 1.0 and until the release of 2.1 i have been defending this game, believing it was good and it would get better, but now i don't even want to log in, and one day everyone will get bored as well.
If this is the kind of game the new generation of players want, then the genere is not for me, but not because i'm on the wrong genre, it's because it has changed.
i did start mmorpg i had 16 years, i'm soon 35 years old... i had my share of mmorpg, i had time in Anarchy Online where i was simply spending time to talk with people.
but as the time have pass the game have offer more and more.
- housing goal? a place where to spend time with people... do it's used like this? no!
- crafting in old mmorpg was rarely the best way to equip yourself...
- adventuring, i remember how big the map of some old mmorpg was... but honestly this was empty most of the time.
the genre have evolve for the better or the worst... but still evolve. we can argue countless hours and still talk about it. what was working 10 years ago will not work anymore now.
Ppl like stuff given to them these days instead of working as a team to achieve something…ffxi was good at that until they destroyed it, but yes the game is new still, but they could have used stuff from ffxi and implement it in here. ffxi had lots of good stuff and people that disagree never played xi, probably a MMO hopper, or played xi but couldn't handle skill+team work and prefers solo. Honestly thou there is no sense of achievement or adventuring everything is instanced, of course sky was great having the whole linkshell up there to kill the gods and kirin everyone working together. Yes you can say "well I was a this job and i didn't do any work", but they could now fix that and balance stuff better.
I've played FFXI for 9 years and although I love the game and treasure my experiences in it, I feel that it's original design is obsolete and that I could never go back to the old-style 'dooms' parties, of spending an entire night waiting for a party invite that never came, of never being able to get anywhere in the storyline because the battle required a certain party set up. And don't get me started on stupid NM monopolization (Shikigami Weapon *cough cough*).
Really, I'm sure most FFXI players only tolerated FFXI's system simply because there was no alternative - the only ones to say otherwise are the hardcore minority who are really gaming masochists and are only happy when the game is actually punishing them. Which I'm afraid doesn't sell games these days.
I know of an MMO with actually quite decent and variable open world content... I keep hoping other MMOs will catch on. :< I would be so thrilled if I could take that MMO's game design and stick it in an MMO with XIV's lore and artistic style. *dreams on*
