Agree completely.
What exactly are we going to be AoEing that's going to be worth "grinding" anyway?

They could just put a cap on the amount of claimed mobs you could have something like 3, this would help if you pulled agro in a party so you could actually deal with it, instead of being scared to touch it incase you lose SP.
Also SMN burns and AOE burns would be difficult as you can't round up a huge amount of mobs in this to AOE as they would all return to their zone unlike in FFXI.
think i said this on a diff post but it suits this convo on this post, but make a number of mobs killed worth the full points and any others worth less or almost none. accordingly to what se see's fit. like nuke 5mobs first 2 are worth full points then 2 are half and the 5th would be worth like 3/4ths of the sp. that way u can kill parties worth if u can but that summoner cheating round up won't work cause anything more then that won't yeild u sp, u'll get like 1sp any extra kill.
Astral burning like in FFXI would be harder to do in FFXIV because you could only gather so many mobs before they start returning to their territory.
To balance it further, just put in a restriction of only 5 normal mob claims max, at once.
The concept of mob claiming is almost FF-online exclusive. I understand they want to prevent "mob griefing/stealing" or "RMT tactics", but they can't do so at the expense of how intelligent players play. This is one of the great limitations on the game right now that doesn't get nearly enough attention.
I totally agree with the OP. Also, mob leashing prevents any exploitable behavior.
Mob leashing prevents astral burn parties from working in XIV. The only reason AB parties were any good was because you could pull the whole zone to one spot. You simply can't do that in XIV due to other mechanics that are already in place (namely: mob leashing).
Smart players wouldn't AoE and would be more careful of what mobs they aggro. Just because you can kill a number of mobs with AoE attacks does it mean you should get more SP than someone else who has no AoE attacks? They way it is at the moment is fair for all classes to level up at a reasonable speed. Doing it any other way would give AoE heavy classes a huge boost in SP gain while giving anyone without AoE skills a disadvantage when it comes to grinding.
There really needs to be more incentive in this game for people to use single target skills instead of constant AoE's, like reduced damage/healing and increased MP costs.
Upon further consideration, this might work if damage from AoE attacks is dispersed in the same manner damage from 1000 needles is dispersed.
the only problem to me would be if you could cast an aoe spell and get sp off all of the mobs i'd see mages grinding in lower areas. sure they would not get as much sp per kill but if they got 50 a kill from 1 shotting a low mob and could pull 5 at once they'd get 250sp for a 1 shot kill. i like the extra sp for killing tougher mobs not being able to sit and kill a bunch of low stuff.
i am not opposed to the idea i just wanted to point out the negatives i could see happening.
