Lightening fruits would take you the opposite direction of soot black. you want to feed it I think 10-15 of each darkening fruits may be a good start. Although its assumed right now that you get somewhere between (+/- 5-10) per fruit. so 10 should be a good starting point

If the message for changing feather doesn't happen for him and he just feeds the fruits without the proc, then he will not get a change in colors. They may change within the range or get close to another but until the proc, there is no change.

Edit: I just re-read both and I guess in the end we're both saying the same thing.

I would try the following "Darkener" combo:

x5 Pear
x9 Beries
x3 Apple

Trying to get to Lotus Pink reliably, like many others. Thus far, I've figured out Snow White and some ugly, sickly-looking pastels.

I've stopped at the first feather-change message each time. (Not skipping any colors.)

From Desert Yellow, 5 Doman Plum -> Cream Yellow
From Cream Yellow, 3 Doman Plum -> Bone White
From Bone White, 2 Doman Plum -> Sylph Green
From Sylph Green, 3 Doman Plum -> Snow White
From Snow White, 1 O'gho Berries -> Sylph Green :(
From Sylph Green, 1 Valfruit -> Snow White

Hopefully this info helps someone. (Looking at you, guy making helpful chart.)

Feed my choco nothing but O'ghomoro berries, (about 15 over three different moltings) and now I have a nice Othard blue.

Thanks! Got confused with values, was thinking I needed to lower numbers and therefore lightening fruits. Just fed 9 apples, 9 pears, 10 berries. Fingers crossed

Desert Yellow (start) -> 6 apples, 9 pears, 3 berries
Millicorn Yellow -> 1 apple
Couerl Yellow -> 6 apples, 6 berries
Pumpkin Orange -> 6 apples, 2 berries
Sunset Orange -> 7 apples, 3 berries
Blood Red -> 4 berries
Dalamud Red!

But I can't seem to break the pattern to get it into Soot Black.

So yesterday i gave my Rose Pink Chocobo 2 Valfruits (got one feather message) and 8 Plums (one feather message) and got Colibri Pink. Not quite what i was going for, but cute nontheless.
