I never said hard stop the story. I said stop linking the quest chain. Does it matter that someone has quest 2.1 and 4.0 active at the same time? Does that somehow interfere with everyone's game play.

How do you not see potions bypass the lore? They literally did not do anything from 2.0 to 3.55. The player did not gain any lore from that part of the game. So SE makes a cutscene. We have dozens of threads go watch the cutscenes on youtube.

Something that has bugged me ever since Yoshi-p's recent comments at the FanFest...

When he was asked about the parser, he gave us his old response: Toxicity here, toxicity there, bla bla bla.

But how can he justify Jump Potions then?
While it is not proven that Jump Potions will cause players to underperform (people can achieve this lack of skill even with FATE grinding or PotD spam), they are most likely to increase toxic behavior, regardless of how they affect player skill.

Player 1: wow, you suck
Player 2: sorry I'm kinda new to this j-
Player 1: you must be one of these jump potion users then

I guess parsers don't make any cash so that might be why...

That's why I find it hypocritical to allow Jump Potions but not parsers.

SE needs to handle their story content a la GW2's Living World episodes. I promise it's not going to be the end of the world if I haven't finished the HW MSQ, buy Stormblood, and then start up the SB story. I could always go back and finish the HW one. (Previous sentences also apply to ARR/HW.)

so you just want everyone to be able to skip the story without paying? that's all?

and you have a very different usage of the phrase "start at its own". i would hardly say something starts on its own if it's smack in the middle of another story but whatever.

you didn't say "bypass", you said "made null" and "negate" those are not the same thing. players can already "bypass" all the lore they want by skipping cutscenes and not reading the text. there's nothing wrong and nothing we should do about players who willingly choose to bypass the lore. you can't force other players to experience the lore if they don't want to and you certainly can't force them to do it at the pace you want them to. there's the whole other topic of forcing players through dungeons and making them watch cutscenes back in the inn after the bosses are already killed, that's bypassing the lore if they never actually go do that and that's a thing the community forces on other players all the time.

and the potion most certainly does not "make null" the lore. your "they" is the player. the "they" in the lore is the WoL. the WoL did do all of those things, when 4.0 happens and the WoL talks to Tataru she's not going to talk to him/her as someone who did not do anything from 2.0 to 3.56. the lore is not null, it's sitting there just like that cutscene in Praeotorium that some other guy was forced to skip and never went back to watch.

it's not because a parser is a tool for toxicity whereas a jump potion is an excuse to be toxic.

if they were going to be an ass they will find an excuse whether or not the jump potions exist but if they didn't have an official tool, they can't proudly claim to use a 3rd party one.

A tool for toxicity? Man, that's rich. It reminds me of back in my WoW days. People clambered left and right saying parsers were evil, because they didn't want their poor play pointed out to them. It was funny as hell.

While I completely agree that toxicity will happen with jump potion, and the hypocrasy of not acknowledging it (by the devs or the community) is a really bad thing, I think that the toxicity arguement for parsers is a cover. I think the real reason (and it was touched upon by Yoshi P) is that they are very afraid of someone backwards engineering the parser software and exploiting it to edit damage calculations and numbers.
