That's a fair point.

I'd say there aren't enough raids to progress through, game doesn't have a real progression, just dailies and one raid.
Actually, it takes 11 weeks.
I'm guessing you weren't around for much of 2.0? This is the exact same progression as last equipment: Darklight >> LotA (Crystal tower) >> Myth >> Coil
Here it's: Law >> Alex >> Esoterics >> A.Savage
Except they allow an upgrade path for Law for A) slightly better stats, and B) dyeing.
And no, you're wrong. It makes perfect sense to charge a lot of Law for the upgrades. Their intended upgrade was hunt seals, but some people *****ed and moaned for whatever reason (I call it laziness and/or ignorance). So they acquiesced to the the whiners and gave them a way to upgrade without seals... but since it's not what they intended, they made it cost a lot. That's completely reasonable.
As for your analogy, it's invalid. In a restaurant, your order is objective, not subjective. If you order a hamburger, you're ordering a hamburger. The situation with Law upgrades is not objective. There is no "wrong order"... you just don't like the method they chose. That's subjective. Despite your personal feelings, you get what you want (your hamburger, I mean Law upgrades), regardless of how it's accomplished.
But the system has always been like this. o.o
That's the problem, there's no real variety :p
[Totally not singling you out with the rest of this post~ This one's for the general masses!]
Grind tomes for gear, only to have it (the gear and tomes) become obsolete, and replaced with more gear and tomes.
Same tome caps, same well....everything.
It's easy but it's fast becoming flavorless, and now since gear is job specific, inventory is going to hurt a lot.
2.0's been around for what now, 2 years almost? I think 2 years and a new expansion is enough time to try and figure out a new system or at least add a little variety. (and by variety, I mean something actually viable... we could spam runs of ex primals, but that's not entirely efficient)
Have a wonderful day guys >o<!
I'm gonna put this out since I feel its worth saying something about this.
/rant on!
I've found that since they released 3.0 last month everything seems to be overtly grindy to an excessive degree. I pretty much have had an FFXIV account since the 1.0 beta days but never played the 1.0 version beyond a few levels because the game felt so directionless at the time and while I had access to the game at 2.0 launch I really didnt get started until 2.2 rolled out. I've levelled every class up to 50 before 3.0 and while it was hard work it felt rewarding and achievable at the same time. With 3.0 this game has gone into overgrind and feels boring and stale.
The new dungeons to say the least very unrewarding. Its basically grind mobs that are slow to die cos they got tons of HP and come out with a very underwhelming amount of exp. You get about 1/4 of a level at 51 but by 57 your lucky to get even 1/8th and this is with rested exp. This makes levelling alts tedious at best and mind numblingly boring at worst because you feel like your barely progressing.
With the law tomestones you get a basic set easily enough and its not too hard either so with the esoteric's I was hoping it wouldn't be as bad as with the poetics pre 3.0 but now its out we have a system thats not only as bad as the old system but in a way is worse because unlike the poetic's gear where you could at least gear 2/3 jobs at once that shared the armor the new esoteric's gear is job specific so you can only gear 1 job at at time at an extremely slow rate. This is just pointless you basically put the same amount of work in as before and get less than half the reward back, the costs on all this esoteric gear should be at least 50% less than what it is right now since you can only use these pieces on one job. The one thing that keeps this game fresh is by being able to play an alternate job and gear it up but sadly you feel like your being punished for alt jobs and forced to basically pick one with this gear setup. This is gear thats gonna be outdated in probably 6 months anyways so whats the point of this?
Realistically I dont mind putting in the work for this stuff if its rewarded at the end of it but this really is starting to feel stale and boring. It would be better to have brought a different system than this tired old one.
1) You should be able to unlock an armor piece CATEGORY each week with the esoterics like body/head/legs/feet and be able to use law to buy extra parts after (ie you buy the PLD body for say 450 esoterics and once you do you can buy any other feet like the DRK/WAR body for 1800 law tomes afterwards but cant get legs until you unlock that category afterwards)/
2) The costs of these parts should be halved outright. 2.2~2.5 you could buy the i100/110 and i120/130 gear that could be used on average on 2 jobs. You could alt gear a 2nd job (or even a 3rd) at the same time till now. If your gonna have job specific armor thats fine but it shouldnt cost the same amount for half the payoff its just unrewarding.
I dont hate this game its got some very good points that I do enjoy but I was hoping that with the expansion we'd see some new ways of getting gear but its not only the same tired stuff coming out again but its less rewarding and mind numbingly boring and unrewarding to the point that I feel like playing FFXI more than this. You feel like your wasting too much time on this atm and I feel like I have to push myself to even bother playing here where as I feel in FFXI that the work I put in pays off right now. The whole balance just feels wrong.
/rant off.
Now back to FFXI for a while till the tediousness leaves FFXIV D:
I mean... I get why they do it, but 3 months to fully gear up in esoterics is a little bit much imo. And while I'm a huge fan of job-specific gear (give us more please!) locking it behind a 3 month capped grind is technically worse than poetics because you can't even gear a role.
It stinks that it's basically impossible to gear more than 1 job at a time when one of the big selling points of the game is "you can do it all on one character."
People have already found out alex savage mechanically isn't that hard it does require high dps and gear checks. This different gear sets give you something to work toward. You aren't suppose to just go jump right into savage with 180 gear you should gear up to 190. Only the best players can beat it in 190 gear cause they push out as much dps as they can. Everyone else will most likely beat it when most of their members are 190 or 200.
tl;dr
I KID! D: (I hate it when folks do that!)
I read the entire thing and I agree with most of the stuff you're saying, and also with what ckc22 is saying.
I like to play all my jobs, I love to be versatile but honestly I feel like I'm being punished for playing this way now. I don't like using undergeared classes for progression content, but now I don't feel like I have much of a choice. What if my little FC are short a tank one night? D: I could switch out from my healer and go PLD, but then I'd be slightly squishier because for the next 3 months I'm pidgeonholed into collecting gear for one class, I can't even share that whm gear I'm working toward with my AST or SCH :(
I really do feel like 3.0 is turning into a flavorless grind... I don't mind work, I don't mind grinding, but I find this dull, repetitive, and utterly flavorless. It was great when 2.0 came out and it was a new concept to us all "Oooh tomes~!" But now we've had 2 years of tomes, and weekly lockouts. I'd like something a little different ._.
