Revelations from Patch 5.5 (Part 1)

We're on Week 2 now, which means new Dwarf quest. I updated my original post to account for it.

So far, it's just Konogg explaining things we already knew. And being a bit taken by the idea of extraterrestrial travelers. Now that I think about it, I don't think we ever stopped to tell him—or anyone in Komra—where we came from.

Well actually I don't think

we really ever tell ANYONE lol. We only ever tell people we're from where the CE came from I think and he never explained it, though I think Lyna suggested she may have figured it out at the end of 5.3. I think only Feo Ul, Ryne etc knew the whole story.

It really wouldn't be that bad. In FFXI, in order to see Luzaf's soul to its eternal rest, and free him from the shackles of the Dark Divinity, you had to repeat a once a week fight 13 times after your initial clear. Every week you had to give the reward selection the same answer, "Free Luzaf's Soul." Each week you were met with indifference by the Dark Divinity, but on the 14th week it finally relents. You swear away your own soul in place of Luzaf's, and are granted a unique title.

Compared to 3 and a half months of reward forfeiture, giving up one week would be nothing. It's already nothing for a lot of players who don't need the rewards from the tower. Redoing the raids would be no different than the reward scenario for the original Crystal Tower side quest involving Noah with the Oneiromantic(Dream Discovery) Pearls.

Yes it would be nothing which begs the question on why we would need it in the first place? How would that truly make it more interesting? For me it does not, I want the whole story or at least most of the questions answered when it ends.

Weekly YoRHa quest

This week was just another grab the machine items, and Konogg's message wasn't that useful as his other one. However, Glagg acted a bit odd, swearing we were planning an invasion with the machines, when suddenly he didn't remember what he was doing or saying. While normally I would attribute this to old age, this is Yoko Taro content, meaning there's something afoot with this.

Not to mention when I looked up Glagg's name to make sure I had it right, I saw two quests, one saying "Strange Glagg" and another saying "Stranger Glagg". Looking further into it, apparently Yoko Taro really was playing the long game here. There are 6 weekly quests here. Since this is week 2, that means 4 more left. Since 5.55 is supposed to come out late May, that means this will either end right before that patch, or the day OF that patch. If it's the day of, I expect that's when the "new ending" will be added to things, if there is one added. If there isn't, hopefully we'll find out what the hell has been going on before that.

The whole line is up on Garland Tools, so you can go read the dialogue in them. Konogg's datalogs aren't available (or at least I don't know where to find them therein) though.

All I'll say is that whatever's up with Glagg is heavily implied (but never explicitly stated) to be something linked to the raids, and unless Konogg's datalogs have some serious substance or they add more in 5.55, there's no real answers or closure.

I don't feel there needs to be, I'm thoroughly enjoying this ride. I'm intrigued to see where this goes, perhaps there's more to be added come 5.55 or even after, perhaps not, I'm curious to see how much we uncover, if there's anything left to discover, perhaps not, and that's okay.

I don't think so. I'd wondered why this stood out to you. Is it a definition leftover from 1.0?

Either way, let's look at Ceruleum and Aetherochemistry and the word Magitek. From what I understand, Ceruleum is basically liquid aether. I've read its description as being the "lifeblood" of the planet in the BLU questline, and I've also read elsewhere that it's the liquid essence of crystals. So it would seem, in the context of FFXIV, Magitek engines burn ceruleum to power themselves. Thus they burn a form of aether, and in so doing, may manipulate aether, generally towards destructive ends. Though obviously there's things like the Boilmaster that heats water for tea.

Aetherochemistry... I'm not sure on? I don't think there are many examples of it in the game, and certainly none that aren't Allagan. The Allagans had the ability to manipulate aether directly, unlike the Garleans, who must do everything with their machines. I'd reckon the difference between Magitek and Aetherochemistry is that you don't necessarily need a machine for the latter.

As for Magitek itself... I am unsure if they're using the same vocabulary that was in FFVI, but in FFVI the word for Magitek in JP is Madō, which as I understand it directly translates to something like, "Sorcery" or "Spellcraft." But if you break down the kanji it's, "Demon Guidance." It is the result of the Empire in that game researching Espers(Phantom Beasts), and then draining their powers. At first the Empire wanted to imbue humans with magical powers, so they performed on Kefka, and it broke his brain, so they moved on to giving it to machines instead. Once the process was perfected, they again performed the imbuements on humans, resulting in Celes. The connotation is always that Madō is unnatural or devilish. The localized name for the Magitek Research Facility's theme is, "Devil's Lab" and I didn't understand that for a long time.

You may want to look at the Japanese version of Thancred's dialogue to know for sure, but he's describing the structure adornments, and he's paraphrasing Urianger while he's at it. With the context of the original definition for Magitek, and the idea that it's a nightmarish structure, nothing about it seems out of place to me.

Regarding Magitek:

I've long since given up trying to work out the limitations and perks of magitek at this point. There isn't much rhyme or reason to it beyond 'rule of cool' being put into play. It used to be that all magitek had a certain style to it clearly influenced by FFVI in particular - with some additional elements weaved in from time to time from FFXII.

It was specifically Allagan technology that happened to be super advanced and Garlean technology was initially portrayed as being powerful but not quite as powerful or as advanced as what the Allagans brought to the table.

Yet over time, they effectively became one and the same. Werylt gave us artifical Eikons and super advanced robots. Regula was able to use his trusty blade to summon forth a ceruleum familiar in the form of a proud tiger. There's many other specific examples I could draw upon, but basically...magitek is very, very different now to how it happened to be during the days of ARR.

Considering this is (I think) the first alliance raid questline that had 'in between' quests for 5.2 and 5.4 I wouldn't be shocked if they added something in 5.55 as a conclusion. Weren't they being cheeky about not calling 5.5 the conclusion to the yorha story or something like that in a live letter?
