[dev1033] Class name changes -> Specialization/Talent Trees Into Classic FF Classes

lmao good stuff.

I honestly don't care which route they choose, I'd rather just not be kept in the dark for so long trying to figure it out. The sooner we know which route they intend to use the sooner we can start shaping our ideas/suggestions to better fit in with their implementations.

At this point the forums is just suggesting stuff for the sake of suggesting it. None of these ideas, mine included, are 100% what they intend to do, some even so far off the mark that discussing/arguing over it is a waste of time.

Ok, I'm lazy and not going to read all 60 pages, but I did read the original post and I gotta say I it got me kind of excited. It doesn't remind me of WoW. Instead it reminds me more of FF Tactics, which I think is great. You get dedicated classes and it feels like you're always working toward and end rather than leveling one class just to get another (i.e. level WAR to 30, unlock, NIN. Level NIN/WAR to 30+, then level THF/NIN, etc.). Here you develop a specialty and build upon what you've already done. And, the great thing is if at some point they want to add a sub job, you have potentially 7 trees to choose from. Even better, you could still have the option to hot swap jobs just by changing your weapon. The WHM has to go home early, then drop your sword and pull out your staff. (... I'm leaving it alone.)

My question is though ... and I'm sure someone has already asked it, but what if you become a PLD and decide you want to give DRK a try? Would you have to complete a side quest to allow you to exchange your points, like yield some weak great sword designed for PLD only, which has terrible accuracy and hit rate, and then hack away at defenseless woodland creatures until you have all your points back? Or, would it be like getting achievements on XBLA, where after a certain number of party wipes, you unlock an achievement where you're no longer fit to be a PLD and then stripped of the title?

Either way, I'm completely for this system. I think it's true to FF culture and it could have a huge impact on storyline and game play.

Yoshi has probably already made the decision on what he's doing to the class system along with the battle system, and it's probably already being written/programmed. The dev tag will give us the option to talk about it when he releases it. Which is fine with me. I just hope its good.

Yeah I agree, I have no doubt about it being good tho. I have 100% faith in SE. I just hope they have a dedicated healing class (white mage) and not a BLM/WHM hybrid anymore its driving me crazy.

lol no. All you would have to do is do the quest for DRK which is designed to be done on the Base Class at Lv20. You'll then be able to swap between DRK and PLD (assuming you did PLD before) on your GLA.

Yeah Jericho, he probably did decide on what hes going to go with in regards to classes which is why I want to hear something from the devs on it. Every new thread that pops up with this dev tag, this thread and the other big thread is just pointless speculating at this point.

Those two hours that were being hinted at fit in well with this. Though I think they should be more in the realm of 30-60 minute cooldown.

Ho ho ho... Job System being teased now. Let's see which way they spin this.

Well new letter said new job system, does that mean they're scrapping the current system and refunding exp? Wasn't very clear...guess we have to wait and see...

The new letter mentioned both the armory system and job system, scrapping the old system seems unlikely.

Scrapping anything is a bad move if it can be avoided imo.

It's either jobs on top of classes (specs) or starting as classes and then proceeding to jobs. Latter sounds odd.

It could also be titles. We don't know because the it such a vague comment. lol

Seriously tough, SE time or Valve time, which is longer?

Should add Blizzard time in there too. But their approach is more blatant "It's ready when its ready. Don't bother us."

SE time during XI felt longer imo. lol

Yoshi-P if you're listening... The key to make your idea successful, regardless of what you decided in the end, is to:

Not use generic MMO terms when naming the system.

i.e even if you decided on a Talent Tree - don't call it a Talent Tree. Call it the Job Grid, Titles or something. Then we can all sit back and laugh as people call it "brilliant". lol

Make it a sphere grid and you have me hooked.

And yeah gemming is sweet in WoW. Looking forward to that. They still need to fix stats so that these Materia choices actually have a purpose.

I like the tree idea of the original poster. It would remind me of Seiken Densetsu 3. I played that game at least 10 times through trying different things. They also had a point allotment setup. I would love it.

I honestly can't stand talent trees. They are rather pointless when you consider the mix/max is inevitable. You might as well have pre-determined traits and abilities. I really wouldn't like that people could respec either. Being able to go from DRK to PLD is rather lame, it would be like having 2 classes at max even though you only leveled one. They are 2 very different classes and should stay separate in my opinion.

I'd much prefer the advanced jobs and a re-haul of all current ones, set up in a more classic FF way.

I don't like skill trees either, I thought these advanced classes or jobs would help preexisting classes spells and only add new abilities/ spells from old FF games lol. TO further pigeon hole people for lack of a better term.

The above comment made very little to no sense.

Hoping Bayohne or Rukkirri could help shed some light on this new Job System that Yoshi-P mentioned in the last letter.

Brilliant idea, very well thought out! I hope the dev's at least read and discuss this together, as it could lead to something very good for this game, and exactly what it needs!

I'm fine with an idea like this as long as we aren't stuck in any path once we activate it. I believe you did mention being able to switch as you like in the OP though, so that's fine. I just hate being restricted or forced down a certain path, that's one of the big things for me in FFXIV. I enjoy having the freedom to play any given class on one character.

This idea has merit~

Although, I wouldn't be opposed to them completely overhauling the current classes, and giving players a one-time ability to shift their current progress from their old classes to the new ones.

Give us a crown post already, and FFS lets us know what direction this game is taking.

While I think the thought is in the right place, I think there should be no "advanced class". There should simply be jobs and disciplines which pour into one another to fill the player's desired mold for a character. As such, I think the job system should only feature what used to be "advanced" jobs for the job system, because jobs should be an ADVANCED FEATURE. The player obtains their jobs by progressing in the game to a point where they can properly access the armory system's needs. Instead of White Mages, the "job" which combines whack n' cast healing should be the Devout. The "nuke" should probably be an Elementalist or Magus. Red Mages should probably be Sorcerers, not to betray the classic flavor of FF, but to enrich the game upon the crannies of it's lore as opposed to the troupes of it's title.

I'm not opposed to "traits", but skill trees, I am, but that's been addressed several times before.

Also.... YES, PLEASE CROWN THIS... This thread has alot of excellent player resources in it

That is kinda the route I would like them to take if they thought it was needed, though I don't mind what they do really as long as it's fun ^^

Its well thought out, but i would avoid the class trees, also i dont know about adding a whole new leveling thing.

I would put jobs as a role, which gives special abilities/traits that you upgrade via quests, these traits would define your class more than your skills, and gear options would also further define them.
But it would nice to hear more of the direction planned for the battle system, no matter which way they are going with it

I'd like to disagree, only on the notion that in my opinion, gear should be mostly aesthetic in value, and though more leve gear which will be job specific has been announced, I'd rather raiding gear not become a part of the game, or NM gear which is better than crafted gear. This is because I am of the opinion, that the game's best items should be crafted, not found. I think end-game gear should represent many mechanical and aesthetic choice combinations to give players more control over their appearance than "What produces the best buffs". So in this respect, I would like gear to avoid being set-driven as well.
