Fact is, vertical progression = longevity. Perhaps somewhat superficially, yet it succeeds far more in keeping people on the game than horizontal progression does. My brother played DAoC for less than a half year for that. TSW is showing signs of potentially going under because of that (both are EA games too... I mean, I like TSW, but not for the gameplay, like at all. So I can't imagine DAoC being any better, and it's more a month than FFXIV? All kinds of no thank you). FFXI was going to go that direction too until they introduced Abyssea, and now has been expanded even more.
I would be disappointed if what I enjoy - leveling and gearing - is only on side classes. Having it as an option is nice, and gives more to do when I hit the caps, yet if it was the only option then I doubt I'd stay much longer in FFXIV.
Ability bloat is a concern, but the current abilities added were to further define the jobs. I bet this will slow down significantly for future xpacs.
