Au Ra physiology and other lore.

It's kind of funny to me that because the female Au Ra are small and beautiful, people think they aren't badass.
How do you know they can't kick some butt and look good doing it? :P Maybe they even wear the pants in their culture despite the burly men!

The one Au Ra we already know about in the story is the pack leader of a ninja gang who's put it all on the line to help an entire population of desperate refugees, and casually chums around with Eorzea's most dubious characters (us).

If you aren't convinced that lizardgirls can't be iron-hard badasses yet, I don't even know what to tell ya.

It's not that they can't be badass, it's more that when you design a character with "moe girl" as the base the result won't ever be that far from "moe girl", and I find that a little frustrating. Ultimately I really wish they used a more Highlander esque hyur approach when making the Xaela, because it doesn't make much sense to be afraid of something basically 5'2 max whenever you're over 6' on the battlefield and the second you see their face it's like a "young maiden in love" sorta appearance, it's not something that says "warring nomads", you feel me?

Starting your game in a schoolgirl skirt and doing a little tuck-pounce when you jump doesn't entirely jive with being from a savage clan of hunter-gatherers, either. But what does check out? A friend of yours in the Rogue quests. An enemy of yours in the Archer quests. And the one dame who hangs out in North Shroud, you know the one.

Yes, it would've been better to give Au Ra ladies a more sturdy option, but if you look at the variety of appearances you can go with for them and are only seeing the pretty-princessness to the absolute exclusion of all other personality, then, well...again, I dunno what to tell ya. Except maybe "sorry."

I guess what I'm getting at here is, this game's writing and atmosphere is pretty damn good at conveying personality and diversity in the races that go far, far beyond their basic character-creation aesthetic, which is a huge inspiration to those who like to give our own characters equally distinct flavor.

Hell, if they can show us Lalafell that are convincingly fierce, strong-willed, and exceedingly not-to-be-trifled-with, as they absolutely have, all first-impression bets are off.

Never said they can't be badass, just stated that they don't look it. Personality is great and I love it, but the pictures do not convey a badass personality. They convey a delicate looking female. I was just disappointed because I was looking forward to playing an intimidating yet attractive soldier. So, I'll stick with highlander. Just my first dnd toon way back when was half dragon, so I had high hopes.

Agreed completely. I just wish the Xaela took that approach while the Raen took the delicate look, it makes more sense that way, but I suppose time restraints prevented them from doing something like that (At least I hope >.>). I might be able to crank something out that looks a little less delicate and more warrior-like looking, but it'll always be looming over my head, especially when trying to roleplay that sort of character around others who's first ideas of your character will be "petite green-skin scaled girl"

Hello world! (First forum post after months stalking);

I'm really anxious to change into Au Ra soon and I'm following this thread since it have been created.

I agree you can make the female au ri look agressive even tough they were designed to be cute/moe. But hey, if you couldn't, what fun that would be to have no variety?

I may post my Au Ri designs later if you guys want to see more.

I think a lot of people agree about this; Auri women are ultra-petite, while men are ruggedly built. Even though I've really taken to them (I really do prefer to play fantasy games as fantasy races, and none of the 1.x ones really worked for me), even I wish the women were just a little taller and more built to match the males' stature. There's at least a 1'6" difference between the men and women (at least!), and the males look like they have twice as much body mass as the women, if not more.

Not saying I want them buff like female Roegadyn, but it would be nice to have a frame that says "I'm a female Auri adventurer who can do something besides sling spells!"

Not gonna stop me from Dark Knighting it up as an Auri woman, but y'know...

There are "rugged" female body types in the game (female Highlanders and Roegadyn), but people aren't playing them very much; why work so hard on something people aren't going to use?

It is possible to make a mature, (sort of) realistically beautiful Auri woman. You can make them sort of aggressive-looking (even if that requires Face 4 and Eyes 3).

So while I do wish Auri women had a body shape other than ultra-petite, and that it were easier to stamp out the moé factor, I'm pretty happy with and understand why we got what we got.

Unless those girls are also the ninjas and being petite helps in stealth during assassinations. I'd have a hard time taking a male Au Ra seriously as a ninja in the same way I doubt many take male Roegadyn seriously in the same position.

See, and that's my issue, it'd make sense for the Raen, being connected to Doma and all, to have petite bodies, why the guy Raen aren't also small and petite is bizarre to me in that case. With warring nomads like the Xaela, I doubt they'd have time for learning precise assassination techniques, and instead probably going at it raw and hard with stuff like Warrior or Monk.

Well, being a warrior culture doesn't necessarily mean you'll be bigger and brawnier. Settling down still requires you to do a lot of physically intensive labor, building houses, working the land and what not. In contrast, Xaela probably eat relatively poorly and travel fairly light, considering their nomadic culture. Carrying capacity is kind of limited when you're on the road all the time. :p

That said, Au'ra girls might just be mooching off on the guys' hard work. Considering their intended moe appeal, it wouldn't be all that surprising, actually. They'd just go "Onii-chan!", the guys would have a nosebleed, and the girls would smirk as they rub their hands together. Hoho.

Unbelievable! Video games, let alone this very series, have set absolutely no precedence for petite girly-girls to be absolute hellraiser wrecking balls. No way, no how. Immersion ruined!

Serious response: How much bearing do the descriptions of racial cultures have at all on Eorzea as it's presented to us in-game? They appear to be there to provide context as to how they wound up there, but have no bearing to speak of on the characters we encounter. In fact, race is almost entirely ignored except in Gridania (where racism is a plot point) and to a lesser extent in Ul'dah (and only for highlander hyur from Ala Mhigo), otherwise it's people who've adapted to Eorzean society's rules for probably several generations at least.

Personal response: The lalafell because I know more of them in high-level raids than roegadyns for some reason, so they've gotta be on to something.

On a somewhat different note, male au ra are no less ludicrously anime than the girls. The only way to make them moreso would be to have their emotes in the benchmark be all straight up Jojo poses.

Race is incredibly important when you keep in mind the Beastmen are a major plot point as well. The reason why racial cultures aren't that important is because SE doesn't want players avoiding choosing Duskwight or Moon Keeper so that they characters aren't treated horribly in Gridania, it's a game thing and not a lore thing. Racial cultures are incredibly important and do factor in the story, we've observed the daily lives of a traditional Sun Seeker clan with the Forgotten springs, had a look into Ala Mhigan (High Lander) culture with the Fist of Rhalgr in the MNK story lines, all that refugee stuff as well, all those beastmen shenanigans, or some of the moogle delivery quests also touch on racial cultures in Eorzea. Heck, there's a reason why there's so many Sea Wolf Roegadyn as opposed to Hellsguard in Limsa, it's because culturally the Sea Wolves are a seafaring race, while the Hellsguard aren't.

Come on now, you're saying you'd rather fight Merlwyb over Lolorito? Lolorito might plot revenge from the grave, but you'd still destroy his feeble Lalafellian body!

Also give /jojopose SE, add it to the Hildibrand questline or something, I've got a desperate need to do Giorno's or Josuke's pose in game.

There are still no real answers about that, their motifs are demons is the only thing we know, we should raise money and send someone to Japan ask the devs.

As an actor I have played characters like this. You can do shy/reserved body language and be a complete psycho. Just have to open the mind a bit :) You never know what someone is thinking or will do. We have yet to see all their fighting animations but meh im not worried. ^^

Well, that's... a bit contextual. As it stands, pretty much any race is going to be a better assassin in Eorzea than the Au Ra, purely because they're so few in number. Assassination requires either being able to blend in or remain undetected; the former is highly difficult for the Au Ra in present Eorzea, even in "casual" clothing. Stealth is something every ninja is trained in, but if we were to go with "realistic" stealth / assassination missions (a la my favorite stealth game ever, Deus Ex: Human Revolution), you'd need to be good at hiding. Otherwise, we've got Assassin's Creed-style assassination / stealth missions, and to do that you need to be able to blend in... which no Au Ra can presently do in Eorzea.

The present "stealth" mechanics don't... don't count. A toggle to be invisible isn't proper stealth. You only get one proper stealth mission as part of one NIN quest.

The Ninja fighting style, though, is another matter. Due to its emphasis on acrobatics and swift movements, a more trim physique is probably best for being a Ninja. Elezen would have no problem with it, since they have very lithe physiques, and despite being a bit bulkier than Midlanders Highlander Hyur shouldn't have too much trouble with it. Roegadyn of both sexes are rather stocky, and due to the extra energy required to move all that mass probably aren't well-suited to the job.

That's not to say a character can't break the mold (female Au Ra Dark Knights, Lallafell Warriors, Roegadyn White Mages, etc.) and for gameplay purposes any character can be any class, but... yeah.

Well, it's a little complicated and we need more information. We don't know how long ago it was, but it's very likely that the Xaela are the Au Ra "template," so to speak, and there simply hasn't been enough genetic drift since the Raen split from them to show any major differences. Perhaps the women are all cavalry and the men make up the bulk of their infantry? /shrug

Well, half and half. It's just that I regularly see Xaela being touted as the ones who should be the 'brawnier' clan because of their warrior nomad, and I feel that isn't strictly true. Or not true, but not as one-sided as some people would think. Saw those discussions happen regularly in another thread on the general forums claiming that Xaela should be closer to the concept artwork, while Raen could stay as they are.

And indeed, there's a lot of assumptions on my side. Gods know, maybe the Xaela are wandering really bountiful lands. Or perhaps it's as bad as I imagine? And maybe they enjoy a bit of deceit and trickery on the side of combat (which could compensate for less impressive muscles), or are they silly berserkers who charge naked into combat? Maybe they even sleep beneath the stars without silly huts. :p

Naturally, the Church of Moe is just a joke. :p

Well, key word would be that their relationship with dragons have been disputed, not disproven.

My money is on that Squeenix likely just wants to keep it a mystery for the Heavensward storyline. Ain't all that weird that we might learn something more meaty about their origins during it, or some other sidequest. We've gotten lots (well, lots is subjective, I suppose) of chances to get to know our current races and clans, after all. :)

It's ambiguous currently. Concept art that says Race_Dragon for the design that's closest to the in game model and the staff during the European press conference claimed them to be reptilian. On the other hand, there's been repeated "There motif is demons" sort of stuff, but people aren't sure if that was just their initial design theme, them going too far with the "Succubus like look" comment, or something else. Early in the thread someone posed the idea of them being based off the creation myth of the Vietnamese children, being born of dragon and Voidsent/Aetheric being in FFXIV's universe, which might actually have some credibility. Currently in game their exact nature is debated among scholars.

Personally I'm going with (and hoping) a draconic nature simply because I like dragons over demons >.>

That's a reasonable answer on why the Raen and Xaela don't look very different actually, however it doesn't answer the question of why are the Au Ra so different structurally/anatomy wise between their men and women. Segregating your armed forces like that isn't the smartest ideas tactics wise, it means entirely separate training camps for people who should be learning the same skills to be as effective as possible.

Plus, cavalry still need to go through intense training in other forms of combat anyways, otherwise if you're without your horse or bow you're a sitting duck. Bringing it back to the mongols' cavalry troops, while their main weapon was the bow, it was generally the idea that they'd also have a sword or hatchet to also use to also use in the field or as backup. Arrows will have a limited supply, but a dull sword still has a sharp point and all.

I really don't get why people want that >.> The other concept art for the Au Ra (specifically the girls) isn't too different, just weird arms/feet, massive horns, actual ears, it's not too different that what we've got.

Heck, because I'm enjoying learning about Mongolians, everyone in the thread might be interested to read up on a Mongolian warrior by the name of Khutulun! She was immensily strong in combat and also pretty darn beautiful from what I'm been reading, while her story is a little bit mythological-like, it's still kinda interesting.

No, I'm saying it makes little sense from most perspectives that the Xaela girls are so petite and waifish. I don't expect them to change it ever, but it sure as hell would be nice if they did.

I don't know. But I'll post mine when I can.

Also, looks like Xaela is really more popular over Raen. Lore-wise, makes more sense. That's a good thing.
I really like female Xaela's skin tones option more than Raen too. But I've the inverse opinion for males.
