strictly speaking, if there's a casting bar to most of their actions they are a caster. if knockbacks and movements make them lose most of their actions they are a caster.

i guess the real test is, what happens when a BRD gets silenced, can they still use what you call "skills" under Wanderer's Minuet.

The distinction here would be between Thematically and Mechanically. "Technically" is wildly over used, but all it means is that the person is speaking to fact. The Fact is, that as you say, Thematically the Paladin is more of a caster than the MCH.

I think for sanity we (as in the average player) use the term caster to refer to non-physical damaged based damage dealers whose abilities require a cast time, so in that sense BRD and MCH as ranged dps but not referred to as "casters" on most occasions

he was talking about casting tanking, not ranged tanking. though casting tanking would not even be a thing because if they can get interrupted they are done as a tank. a RDM "tank" would have lots of instant cast spells or some Surecast spells/traits.

which would kind of be cool? like Thunder Spikes, duration 30 seconds, while under this effect the caster cannot be interrupted.

I think what Kaurie meant was that your contradiction was about you saying hybrid jobs aren't viable in this game, and then the next moment you're saying that healers function as casters whenever they apply Cleric Stance. Ergo, hybrid jobs already exist, it's just not possible for a healer to queue as dps* unless they go in with a full group (which my FC has done while levelling 50-60 when we had two tanks or two healers in the same level range).

*) Unless you're a Scholar and switch to Summoner, of course.

I've actually wondered that ever since I noticed that one of the classes/roles in SWtOR was a ranged tank. I never tried it out, though, so I still have no clue how it works. xD

I remember tanking as a NIN/BLM in FFXI whenever I was allowed to or just for the fun of it. It oddly enough was very effective in many cases. Non-stop Ninjutsu spells going along the elemental wheel weaknesses to maximize threat and damage. The primary reason people didn't bother though was because it was expensive as **** to keep up with. Dedicated tanks were clearly a lot better though when you hit 90+ for threat holding, it's just that it was a change of pace to go NIN/BLM and gear up with INT and MAB stats.

A casting tank doesn't mean "ranged"

It means spells like Blizzard II.

Ah, yes. My eyeballs grabbed onto "Ranged casting" and skipped over the "Casters in general."

It could work. Like you said, they'd likely need Black Mage as a Cross class ((Shame of you...)) and plenty of uninteruptible skills and skills that prevent one from being interrupted.

As for TOR's Ranged tanks. Basically they're Tanks that use gun. They still fight at melee range, unless the enemy is also righting at range.

Actually I was making the tank stance give you either faster caster, or interrupt protection.
